Laura ScrimshawNesting Pied- Billed Grebe: The grebe parents were working hard on the nest even though it was already filled with eggs. This behaviour seemed so odd to me, so I did some reading. Because the grebes create a floating platform on which to nest, the weight of the eggs makes the platform begin to sink. To prevent the eggs from going underwater, the grebe parents are constantly finding new vegetation to put under the nest to keep the platform above water level. Both parents will leave the nest as needed to work on the platform, but the eggs stay warm because the decaying vegetable matter gives off heat, acting like a mechanical incubator.
