MLK Jr. Day appeal: Help advance statewide water affordability!

Dear Friend: We need your help to pass statewide water affordability legislation: Senate Bills 549-554, and 25; and House Bills 5088-5093. These bills will enact a new affordability water program and fund, plus shutoff and tenant protections to help families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Dr. King spoke of the importance of ensuring that policies and laws protect the rights of poor people. He also recognized the importance of access to life’s basic needs for the fulfillment of individual health, livelihood, and potential. In Michigan, unaffordable water, sewage, and stormwater drainage bills are a growing problem for thousands of low-income Michigan residents. When local water utilities pass along costly water infrastructure upgrades, maintenance, and operations fees to customers, many households are forced to choose between paying their water bill, medication, food or other essentials. Affordable water bills are critical to human rights and civil rights protections that low-income Michiganders need for survival and health. Please ask House Speaker Tate to use his leadership to move this bill package into law. Thank you!

“The Michigan Welfare Rights Organization supports efforts being launched by State Senator Chang and others to craft legislation toward a #WaterAffordability Plan across our beloved State that will address payment plans especially where low-income populations live.
Press conference today to announce new #WaterAffordability plan/bills for citizens of Michigan. h/t Senators Chang, Bayer and Representative McKinney and People’s Water Board Coalition.
The statewide #WaterAffordability package by Senators Chang and Bayer and Representative McKinney for Michigan residents is crucial to addressing water insecurity and providing household protections.

@anubis2814 a pool, yeah makes sense, but grandma who’s on fixed income taking care of grandpa who’s on dialysis as well as two young grandkids because a parent has been murdered & the other incarcerated trying to decide if she’ll pay her water bill or purchase food, I think #WaterAffordability should be implemented so she can pay an equitable percentage rate & not the same rate amount as the corporations. #WaterisaHumanRight & that’s a typical example of who’s left out
@[email protected] I get that. And that’s why I’m fighting for #WaterAffordability the thing in Michigan & specifically Detroit is that the rest of Southeast Michigan uses the water from the Detroit River & Detroiters absorb that cost so others can have a low water bill. Folks in the rural parts of Michigan can install a well, but city folks can’t. I wish we could.
Water should be FREE. If we’re made up of 70% water & the earth’s made up of 70% water, then charging for water should be illegal. I believe in #WaterAmnesty
And while we’re in this #JustTransition at the very minimum we MUST have #WaterAffordability
Everyone needs access to clean affordable water to drink, clean, cook, etc. The military uses cutting off water as a tactic on its enemies as an act of war. So the city cutting off water on its own citizens should be seen as such #WaterisaHumanRight
