‘Dangerous and Shameful’: 42 House #Democrats Help #GOP Send #Trump Spying Bill to Senate

“It was these Democrats’ responsibility to stand up against this administration, and they voted to stand down instead,” said one campaigner.

Jessica Corbett, Apr 29, 2026

Excerpt: " 'The 42 Democratic votes to advance Speaker Johnson and Donald Trump’s #surveillance agenda are dangerous and shameful,' she declared.

" 'These Democrats defied their constituents and common sense to undercut meaningful privacy reforms in the House and instead voted to hand over sweeping spy powers to the Trump administration,' she stressed. 'This means continuing #warrantless backdoor searches and allowing an increasing number of federal agencies to exploit the data broker loophole to supercharge #AI and fuel mass #DomesticSurveillance.' 'Dangerous and Shameful': 42 House Democrats Help GOP Send Trump Spying Bill to Senate | Common Dreams

Dozens of Democrats in the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives helped pass a key spying bill, which faces an uphill battle in the Senate.

Common Dreams

@arrrg CHARMING. One of the four #Dems in favor of #warrantless #wiretapping is Rep. Josh #Gottheimer, who is also the sponsor of the infamous operating-system-level "age verification" bill (with the Orwellian name "Parents Decide") that would effectively require a remote kill switch for every PC. (His Republican cosponsor is the notorious election denier Rep. Elise #Stefanik.)

Always remember: not only are ALL of the #Republicans our deadly enemies, so are NEARLY all the #Democrats. This Nazi vermin #Gottheimer is merely the worst of a bad lot. #JackassParty

I don’t want #JimJordan near Minority Leader gavel!

“Jordan is playing an even more crucial role to ease through the quick #reauthorization of a key #surveillance program ahead of an 4/20 deadline at the behest of the #whitehouse.
That’s a flip from 2 yrs ago, when Jordan opposed renewing the program & eyed a push for “real reform” to protect Americans from #warrantless #spying in 2026.”

“Jim Jordan’s dream might not be deferred much longer”

A Tale of Two Bills: Lawful Access Returns With Changes to Warrantless Access But Dangerous Backdoor Surveillance Risks Remain - Michael Geist

The decades-long battle over lawful access entered a new phase yesterday with the introduction of Bill C-22, the Lawful Access Act. This bill follows the attempt last spring to bury lawful access provisions in Bill C-2, a border measures bill that was the new government’s first piece of substantive legislation. The lawful access elements of the bill faced an immediate backlash given the inclusion of unprecedented rules permitting widespread warrantless access to personal information. Those rules were on very shaky constitutional ground and the government ultimately decided to hit the reset button on lawful access by proceeding with the border measures in a different bill. Lawful access never dies, however. Bill C-22 cover the two main aspects of lawful access: law enforcement access to personal information held by communication service providers such as ISPs and wireless providers and the development of surveillance and monitoring capabilities within Canadian networks. In fact, the bill is separated into two with the first half dealing with “timely access to data and information” and the second establishing the Supporting Authorized Access to Information Act (SAAIA).
