Alixandrina Flandery McDermitt the Third (Part 2)

It didn’t take me long to find the source of the sound: a rockslide. No doubt, a traveler had become trapped while sheltering in a cave. Or maybe it was a band of outlaws. I shrugged; I was sure a blast of fire would deal with the latter, and the former might offer me untold wealth for helping them. After all, I needed money. Inns weren’t cheap, even the kind I used, and my purse was flat.

“Who are you?” I called.

“Alixandrina Flandery McDermitt the Third, but you can call me Alix,” the voice replied.

That sounded promising. What self-respecting bandit would have a name like that?

“What can I do for you?” I asked even though I knew the answer. It seemed like a good warm-up question to encourage a bribe.

“If you free me, I’ll reward you well. Let’s see, would a robin-egg-sized ruby do? Or would you prefer a gold nugget?”

That had worked out better than I had hoped. “It will be a lot of work,” I said.

“How about both?”

Wow, this was a soft touch. It was almost disappointing how easy it had been.

“I’ll seal you back in if you’re lying,” I said. “I would hate to go through all that labor only to release a thieving beggar without a groat to her name.”

“Truly, I wouldn’t try to cheat you.”

I sighed, dusted off my hands, and began levitating the rocks out of the way. Even if Alex only had a bent copper, it was the right thing to do.

Gradually, a cave entrance appeared, though I couldn’t see anyone. “You can come out,” I called.

“It needs to be wider,” a deep, rumbling voice said. “It is too small for Alix.”

I frowned. How big was this individual? But rather than protest, I pushed a large boulder aside, enlarging the hole. “There, that should do!” I said.

Alix can finally see daylight,” the voice said.

I readied a spell. By all rights, a trapped person, eager to leave their confinement, should have appeared by now.

The wisdom of this was soon apparent as a snaky head emerged from the cave's depths.

“You're a #dragon!” I said as I prepared to blast it.

What I’d feared began soon after I summited the pass. The heavens opened up, and the rain came pelting down. By all rights, I shouldn’t have been flying, but the other option was a hard climb up a rocky, narrow trail etched through shale fields that was reputed to be haunted by bandits. All in all, being buffeted by the winds that tore at my black robes and tangled my long, ashen hair seemed the wisest choice.

Still, there was a limit to how much I dared, and with lightning threatening, I landed in a rugged dale that promised shelter.

And who was this daredevil with amethyst eyes and a shiny mage’s star on her cloak?

Why, of course, it was I, the young, beautiful Elaina the Ashen Witch. Who else?

Once on the ground, I made my way across the snowfields to a twisted copse of alpine pines. Under their protection, I could keep the rain off and build a small fire of pinecones and branches. It would have been cozy watching the flames dance in the draft that seeped through the leafy umbrella of my resting spot, except for the storm’s keening.

There was something else, too: a moaning that didn’t seem to be from the restless air. The sound was thin and whiny, yet had a bass quality that precluded it from being the wind or a ghost. During a lull, I made out the words: “Help! Let Alix out.” No, it definitely wasn’t a spirit; perhaps it was a wayfarer like myself.

At first, I considered ignoring it. One could never tell if a fellow wanderer would be grateful and offer a reward or be a bandit who would murder you in your bed. But after wrapping my cloak around myself and attempting to sleep, I gave up. Who could rest with that dreadful whining?

Stone… Err, Knife Soup 2 of 2

#Fanfic #WanderingWitch
#Wss366 redolent

“Now for the first ingredient,” I said as I looked about for a stone. What met my eyes were cobblestones filthy with cow manure. That would never do. Even I wouldn’t eat something made with such a foul ingredient.

I quickly opened my bag and produced… “A knife the fairies gave me,” I said. “It was used to cut the heavenly fruit served to Queen Mauve. In acknowledgment, she blessed it with the property to infuse broth with the most wonderful flavors.”

"But alas, it will just be broth—flavorful, nutritious, but thin," I said, dropping the knife into the pot with a flourish and stirred the water. "If only we had a few potatoes."

A thin woman nudged the man next to her, whispering something in his ear.

He nodded, ran off, and soon reappeared with a few potatoes. “Been saving them, just in case. But if you can feed us all, then it’s worth it.”

I took the potatoes and frowned. My knife was in the pot. "Can someone lend me a knife?"

A boy soon produced one, and the potatoes went into the pot, skin and all.

“It’s a shame,” I said. “A good potato soup requires carrots, but this will be filling even without them.”

Another farmer ran off, and soon, I had a bunch of carrots, which also went into the broth.

“Perhaps someone has some leeks or onions,” I said. “Oh, what a wonderful stew it would be with just a few.”

As before, I soon had my ingredients, as well as a head of cabbage, mushrooms, and a rutabaga.

I took a sip. "Wonderful! The flavors imparted by the knife blend so well with your ingredients. It needs only one more thing.”

I made a show of checking my robes, revealing empty pockets. “The fairies took off with my salt and pepper. What is soup without those?” They might as well take the blame, I thought, for lack of spices.

Several people turned on a man who was slightly better dressed than the rest, and I do mean slightly. “Well, Mayor?” they demanded.

“Yes, yes, of course,” he said and headed off, soon to reappear with the requested items.

“I have some rosemary,” a young woman approached, offering me a sprig.

“And I have sage,” someone else said, thrusting it into my hands.

“Mm, this smells good,” I said, adding the seasoning. Indeed, the air was #redolent with the savory smell of soup.

Taking one last stir, I announced: "It should be ready by the time someone fetches bowls."

And as for me, belly full, I was content. I scooped up my knife, saying, “Your generosity fills my heart with gladness. There will be no need to erect a monument to me,” and left town.

And who was this fabulous cook? This modest genius? A procurer of ingredients from thin air and thinner peasants?

It was I, Elaina, the Wandering Witch!

The journey to the next country proved longer than I expected, and nightfall forced me to camp under a large oak. Curled up by a fire, I ate the last of my bread and watched the fairy lights dance in the distance before finally drifting off to sleep.

I woke in the morning stiff and found that the fairies had left me rose hips, dried hawthorn berries, and leaves filled with dew. Their kindness touched me, even if it made for a grim breakfast.

A few hours later, I was happy to see a village on the horizon. At the very least, I should be able to buy milk and bread there. Imagine my horror when I opened my purse and found golden aspen leaves instead of gold! Fairy kindness! Bah! I’d been swindled. Robbed is more like it—but it came to the same thing. I had no money to buy food.

But there was always people’s natural charity. “Could someone spare me a crust of bread?” I asked.

What! There was famine, and nobody was going to feed a poor, starving witch. What was this world coming to?

“Ladies and gentlemen,” I began. Not that there were any gentle folk in attendance for my speechifying in the village square, only thin-faced peasants with hostile looks.

“As you can see, I am a witch,” I said, showing off the star brooch on my chest. “Having heard of your plight, I’ve traveled from my home to help. If I can bother you for a large kettle and a fire, I am prepared to serve up a feast such as your bellies have never had before.”

Despite their suspicious looks, the villagers soon lit a fire and produced a large copper kettle.

There was a young girl in black robes. Her long, ashen hair blew in the wind, for her pointy hat had blown off and was clutched in her hand. On her robes was pinned a star-shaped brooch, marking her as a witch.

Who could it be?

Of course, it was me, Elaina, the Ashen Witch.

The narrow country road, my feet followed, ran between farm fields that lay as far as the eye could see. Sweet potato, rice, lush clover, tall leeks, cabbage, and many more; for this was a rich agricultural country. White flax blooms #rippled in the wind, and small red flowers, like a carpet, bloomed between the crops.

Presently, I came upon rows of peas, with a girl no older than me sitting in the middle of them. Around her were piles of shelled peas that nearly hid her blue satin dress. With her porcelain complexion, seated amid the carpet of red flowers, she almost appeared to be a #doll. In her hand was a newly shelled handful of emerald globes, which she studied carefully before discarding and moving on to the next unopened pod.

She called out when she saw me, "You can’t have him."

I smiled and nodded. "As you wish. May I ask who I shan't have and what you are doing?"

"I am looking for my prince?" Her tone implied she thought me a dunce, but I didn't mind. I thought her rather foolish looking for a prince in pea pods.

"Is he a pea?" I asked, imagining a prince shoved into a pod. The thought made me grin. There wasn’t enough room for a noble’s ego in a pea pod, let alone his body.

"Of course, where else would he be?"

"In his castle or hunting a dragon," but I kept those thoughts to myself.

"And how will you know him?" I said instead.

"I just will. He will be the handsomest pea to ever have existed."

"And will you kiss or eat him to transform him back?"

Her look was withering. If I had been one of the crops, I would have shriveled up on the spot. "Neither, I will put him under my mattress. He will keep me up all night, and I will bear him a beautiful blond heir."

I didn't ask how this would all transpire. Instead, I put my hat on, for the wind had dropped, bid her farewell, and continued on my journey.
