The #Walgreens on Central and Osborn in Phoenix has four several years employed playing Toccata and Fugue in D Minor very loudly on their loudspeakers to drive away the unhoused.
Today I note that theyâve switched to a piece I donât recognize; however, it is a very fast-paced and shrill violin solo. I think this might work. Itâs a bit like a swarm of mosquitoes.
On the plus side, local #walgreens has no drive up window.
On the negative side, there's a 4-hour line standing in the store.
Walgreens, I could solve all your problems in 1 minute: Pay a living wage, staff up, and profit.
I hate to use #walgreens in support of their âunderstaffing as a business modelâ but itâs easy bicycling distance from home.
Remember, âvote with your walletâ concedes the race to the biggest wallet.

Even though #Covid is airborne, I figure better safe than sorry when I have to interact with people while contagious, so I asked the #Walgreens pharmacist at the drive through if he could sell me hand sanitizer, but he said they couldn't fetch it for me.
I decided to run in (masked) to get some. Turns out they keep it in the very back of the store, under lock and key, so I needed to stand around waiting (with Covid) while someone came FROM THE PHARMACY WHERE I HAD JUST ASKED THEM TO FETCH IT to unlock it and hand-carry the bottles to the register so I could buy it.
We live in a Kafkaesque nightmare.
qwant news | El proyecto de ley de Titus combatirĂa la ola de delitos en el comercio minorista
Federal RepresentativeâŻDinaâŻTitus, a Nevada Democrat, was inspired to introduce the Retail Crime Organized Crime Act after witnessing a shoplifting spree at a LasâŻVegas Walgreens, where a man stole an entire stock of falseâeyelash extensions and fled. The bill would broaden federal jurisdiction over retailâtheftârelated offenses, allowing prosecutors to bring charges based on the total value of goods stolen over a twelveâmonth period and covering interstate transportation, sale, receipt, or theft of stolen shipments. It also expands antiâmoneyâlaundering statutes to include prepaid generalâuse cards, gift certificates, and storeâgift cards, and would create a dedicated hub within the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate federal lawâenforcement efforts against organized retail crime.
Nevada, home to a massive logistics network, is especially vulnerable: LasâŻVegas ranks sixth among U.S. cities for retailâcrime losses, with Nevada businesses suffering more thanâŻ$466âŻmillion in 2021. The stateâs freight system moved roughlyâŻ150âŻmillion tons of cargo worthâŻ$164âŻbillion in 2022, and recent raids on rail lines in the Mojave desert have resulted in thefts of Nike sneakers, Apple products, and AMD chips totaling several million dollars. The legislation, coâsponsored in the Senate by fellow Nevada Democrat CatherineâŻCortezâŻMasto, seeks to protect the stateâs role as a national logistics hub and send a clear message that organized thieves will no longer be allowed to undermine supply chains or inflate everyday prices.
The billâs relevance is underscored by smallâbusiness owners like JuannyâŻRomero of Mothership Coffee Roasters, which operates seven cafĂ©s in LasâŻVegas. While her shipments have not been directly targeted, Romero reports a rise in âfriendly fraudâ and faces steep cost pressures: tourism has dropped 40âŻ%, coffee import costs have surged 160âŻ% at one point, and tariffsâthough later liftedâhave created lingering uncertainty. By backing Titusâs legislation, local entrepreneurs hope for a robust, nationwide solution that goes beyond patchwork local measures, safeguarding both Nevadaâs economy and consumers across the United States.
