"The Tribunal found that Māori did not agree with the Crown’s decisions but were denied the right to self-determine what is best for them and hauora Māori. Instead, the Crown implemented its own agenda – one that was based on political ideology, rather than evidence, and one that fell well short of a Tiriti/Treaty consistent process.."

"Prebble ... opposed even limited recognition of Māori rights through the ... Foreshore and Seabed Act. ... recognition of Māori interests in water through Three Waters. ... He has nothing positive to offer the Tribunal, and his appointment can only be seen as an attempt at sabotage ... And to add insult to injury, we'll be paying for him to undermine them from within."

Some say the Treaty Principles Bill is rooted in ignorance, but Rupert O’Brien argues the Act Party is making a calculated move to remove a significant barrier to its privatisation and deregulation agenda.

Many political commentators think the Act Party doesn’t fully grasp the importance of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, or lacks understanding of their real purpose. But this belief gives far too little credit to the party’s forward planning. Act, and their benefactors, do understand Te Tiriti, they remember the effects that it has had in the past, and they know that it stands as a major obstacle in their goal of deregulation and promoting laissez-faire economics.

"Doogan, therefore, set the date for the summons as April 26 to allow time for the Crown to test these issues in the High Court (in a hearing scheduled to take place today) ... Far from being evidence of a tribunal running amok and overstepping its authority, these proceedings appear to be the very model of careful and reasonable decision-making, with due regard and deference to the constitutional relationships at play."

Crown lawyers will try to convince a judge today that Karen Chhour shouldn't have to answer the tribunal's questions.
