Last walk of the week: Rosthwaite circular via King's How, Brund Fell and Great Crag.
Nearly 8 miles of walking in a very green, very wet landscape, plus a brutal, knee destroying descent.
By the time you've (almost) got your walking legs it's time to go home 😐
Today: Raven Crag (via The Benn). In the words of Wainwright, a "mighty buttress of grey rock towering above Thirlmere dam".
Although the skies were drab (& full of midges &, seemingly, flying ants) for our late afternoon walk, the views were still spectacular. The summit appears to have been significantly sanitised since AW's day, & many of the issues he described now appear to have been overcome (via the introduction of steps, wooden walkways & the felling of trees).
Today's walk: High Rigg (aka Naddle Fell) via Wren Crag. Situated just north of Thirlmere, adjacent to St. John's in the vale. A modest 4.5 miles.
Purple heather in abundance. Done & dusted before midday.
Wainwright reckoned this to be "a splendid little ridge walk suited to old & rickety fellwalkers long past their best". It's a fair cop.
