In 1912, the Maine governor forcibly evacuated a small community from their Malaga Island home, claiming the mixed-race inhabitants were morally and mentally deficient. In this book, the island and the people are renamed, but some details and events are taken from history. The empathetic depictions of the people and the poetic descriptions of the island are the stars here. Though poor and undereducated, the inhabitants manage to survive, if not thrive in their own way.
