Lively panel discussion at the end of #WIConf24 on #GreenCoding: This approach to improving the ecological sustainability of software systems remains mostly confined to academic and specialized communities. What needs to be done to make Green Coding more accessible and efficient?
An innovative horizon scanning approach presented by Lorenz Erdmann at #WIConf24 shows how digital transformation affects research, transformation policy and the day-to-day business of organizations. The results show: this approach can help to eliminate biases in future thinking.
#Cybersecurity and the communication about it are crucial in the digital age. In their study, Florian Meissner et al analyzed tweets from Germany's BSI, which aims to protect digital consumers but often posts vague, self-referential tweets. Their model could help. #WIConf24
Great talk by Josephine B. Schmitt (@CAISnrw), who studied peoples visions for a #sustainable and #digital #future. Their experiences and realities are often not included in sustainability policies, but they provide a broad spectrum of expectations and a rich tapestry of imaginaries. #WIConf24
Technologies are human made, Sigrid Kannengießer (University of Münster) therefore focuses on those practices of (infra)structuring #AI. Who are the actors, how are they using technologies, and how are they shaping them towards more #sustainability? #WIConf24
Ina Schieferdecker kicking off Day 2 of #WIConf24 with her keynote (adapted after the panel last night) addressing some of the prominent myths about technology: Innovation is never just technical, it is always sociotechnical. And there is no dichotomy between technology and green.

"The only thing that grows at this speed is cancer." Our first #WIConf24 panel discusses the environmental costs, the geopolitical nightmares behind global #AI supply chains, the effects on labor and its exploitation, as well as the collective harms of subtle hallucinations.

Interesting panel talking about the destructive nature of late-stage #capitalism, including the importance of labour rights and our very livelihoods, like #water.
