Week in Review: August 8, 2025 - with Josh Cohen

Seattle voters delivered a decisive message for change in Tuesday's primary election, with progressive challengers leading incumbent Mayor Bruce Harrell and other moderate office holders in what political observers are calling a sweeping rejection of the current administration's moderate policies.

Hacks & Wonks
For the 4th time in a year, Seattle voters made their preference for more progressive governance clear. In the mayoral race, Katie Wilson leads the moderate incumbent mayor Bruce Harrell. Wilson’s opponents tactics of painting progressives as extreme may have gotten stale. #SEAelex #WAvotes

Off to vote early today - wasn't impressed by my #WAVotes experience earlier this year - some company contracted to do work in some assinine "cost-saving measure" did a crap job that reduced public confidence in the voting process. [swears at stupidity of those meant to be overseeing such decisions]

The #AEC had better do a better job.

(Hopefully they've stopped lying to schoolchildren about having to be an Australian citizen to be able to vote.)

We did and now Bazza is Leader of the State Parliamentary Liberal Party.

💫👀 #AusPol

So happy for #KerryStokes and the #7MediaGroup.

Bazza brings so much to this important position; height, good looks, a long history of yuckie choices. Sure to succeed.

Will Bazza get on with the Liberal guy on the ABC's election night coverage, who bemoaned the Liberal's #GunControlLaws from post-#PortArthurMassacre days?
Leave that for Kerry to decide?

Let's hope they don't keep going to the left.

Well the loss of control is something.

Negotiation with a range of parties?
This is not democracy as we know it Jim.
But surely they're all in thrall to the mining companies?
Let's wait for developments Captain. It was said to take 18 months to corrupt a newly elected NSW state government. Surely sandgropers will be less suseptible.

(Article is a dogs breakfast. But at least not a whiff of AI.)

It seems unlikely but it would be funny to see this happen again: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-21/wa-election-results-leave-liberals-in-race-for-opposition-status/105081532

The smart play would be for the Liberals and Nationals to sign another opposition alliance agreement and be jointly recognised as the opposition again, since neither has very many seats individually. If that happened, I can't really see the Nationals making the case that they should be the senior party this time around.

WA election results leave Liberals in danger of remaining second-tier opposition party

The WA Liberals are staring down the very real possibility of remaining the state's second-tier opposition party for the next four years as the tight race for lower house seats continues.

It kind of feels weird to be agreeing with Zak Kirkup's quotes in this article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-10/wa-election-2025-electoral-commissioner-calls-suspension/105032768

You can underfund the WA Electoral Commission or criticise how they ran the election, but it seems a bit on the nose to do both.
