Celebrating #NAIDOCWeek with posts and stories from Tall And True: Some Things Change, Some Stay the Same (2023). "As the #Voice Referendum proved, in Australia, while some things change, some stay the same." 🖤💛❤️

A group of us who campaigned for the
#VoiceToParliament have formed a #FirstNations Book Club, where we read books written by #Indigenous #Australians.
After hearing Claire Nichols' conversation with Leonie Norrington and Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs on ABC Radio National's The Book Show about the collaboratively authored A Piece of Red Cloth (Allen and Unwin 2025), I recommended we add the book to our reading list.
Norrington is not an Indigenous writer, but Yolŋu Elders adopted her family when they moved to Arnhem Land in the 1960s. Norrington's adoptive mother, Clare Bush, worked with her on an outline for the book, based on oral history about the kidnapping of a Yolŋu girl by Makassan traders.
After Bush died, her sisters introduced Norrington to the book's co-authors and Yolŋu knowledge holders, Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs, Djawa Burarrwanga and Djawundil Maymuru, to finish the project.
Set in the 1600s, the book is a fictionalised historical account of the Yolŋu people and their culture, their trading and personal interactions with the Makassans, and the impact of Dutch merchant colonisers on what was formerly a respectful relationship between the Yolŋu and Makassans.
While I felt aspects of the patriarchical Yolŋu society made for uncomfortable reading, the (female) majority of our Book Club did not share my discomfort, and this is a book written by women about strong women.
It's also a book that reveals the less well-known pre-English colonial history of Indigenous Australia, and for that alone, it's well worth reading! ⚫🟡🔴

The Yolnu people of the Northern Territory had a fruitful trading relationship with the Makassar people from Indonesia long before Australia was colonised. Yolnu people would even visit Makassar, some never returned. In A Piece of Red Cloth, Arnhem Land writer Leonie Norrington, who has collaborated with three elders from the region, including Merrkiyawuy Ganambarr-Stubbs, evokes some of the stories told about the relationships formed and cultural exchanges. But there are tensions. Some Yolnu people are suspicious of the intentions of the Makassar traders, alcohol is free-flowing and Yolnu women are particularly vulnerable.

As I wrote in 2023 and #PeterDutton proved again this week, Some Things Change, Some Stay the Same in #Australia when it comes to respect and recognition for #Indigenous #Australians! (Let alone Closing the Gap!) 😔 #auspol #voicetoparliament

I met Gav Harris during the #VoiceToParliament campaign, and we catch up regularly for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Although the Vote Yes campaign failed, a tragedy, one good thing came out of it for me: my friendship with Gav.

In May 2023, I joined a local group campaigning for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. We had high hopes. But as the Referendum result in Australia on 14 October proved, while some things change, some stay the same. 😔
