I guess it's "Public Education" be damned.
----
"Don Avison, a former deputy minister of education and former board chair for Emily Carr University, has been tasked with suggesting fixes that don’t rely on additional provincial funding."
---
me: Students, Insitituions, and previous NDP government reviews have been warning about this for years.
----
"Freedom of Information requests obtained by student advocates showed that Wright was warning the province as early as 2023 about the dangers of colleges and universities relying on international student tuition — and that further increasing international enrolment wouldn’t solve financial issues."
"In its submission to Avison, the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators said the undermining of B.C.’s resource economy by U.S. tariffs makes having a robust system of post-secondary education outside the Lower Mainland even more vital.
It said public post-secondary institutions are “widening access, stabilizing households, and giving people the tools to stand on their own two feet.”"
It's a party!

While the financial picture seems to be stabilizing at VIU in Nanaimo, it has been a very rough past 2 years. The worst in my 25 years. I have seen so many colleagues forced into retirement and others, sessionals just not be around.
In total just on the Faculty, IT, Librarian and Advisory forces alone, my union has lost close to 100 members.
The really really frustrating thing is faculty unions and others have warned administration and government for YEARS... Decades... that the over reliance on massive international student fees and enrolments was a huge risk.
The chicken is now officially home and roosting and it sucks. We are deeply hurting the ability of our young people to be successful. 😢
(Trades and Staff are in different Unions - BCGEU and CUPE respectively - from VIUFA faculty at VIU. They have suffered greatly too. BCGEU possibly a little less as a percentage, but CUPE, definitely more. )
I am plotting a 'return to school' - basically looking for a more-formal continuation of my never-ending-self-schooling. And, obviously, #VIU is a top convenient choice.
What would be your guidance for an oldbie wanting to take courses with no specific concentration but a dozen different obsessions?
only in Nanaimo at VIU can you count more than 10 tiny nearly identical bunnies in all of 10 minutes.
one new clutch of 5 perfectly black, tiny guys were munching grass in no more than a 10ft space just now. Multiple students were just standing quietly watching them like 🥹🥹🥹
this tiny fluffball was eating under the protection of a tree in the japanese garden this morning. there was a grey friend nearby.
truly a hard life for bunnies
