We are pleased to announce the release of #VitruvianOS 0.3.1!

VitruvianOS 0.3.1

Vitruvian is the human-centric Operating System.

Just tried #VitruvianOS 0.3 .iso on my Thinkpad X280 (also my Haiku Machine) from a USB pendrive.

Preliminary stuff but overall feels nice  to see it boot up. WiFi didn’t work on this build but being based on Debian drivers we know in some time not only will wifi work but also graphics acceleration, something #Haiku can’t have that easily compared to good old Linux kernel.

Overview of Vitruvian OS 0.3 on QEMU

As we have posted earlier about the team behind Vitruvian OS announcing version 0.3 to the public for the first time, this project is not yet another Linux distribution. It’s a Linux-based operating system with BeOS components on top, with the Nexus module to allow BeOS applications to run on top of Linux for maximum compatibility.

If you have been our long time reader, you might have noticed that we’ve tested BeOS on our old computer and shown you how it performs there, and the performance out there was very impressive.

So, we have downloaded the first public release of Vitruvian OS from here:

Download Vitruvian OS

Version 0.3 is just 600 MB in size, which means that it can fit on a CD-ROM, without having to resort to bigger drives like DVD-ROM. Now, after we’ve downloaded the ISO file, we can begin running it.

Assuming that you’ve downloaded QEMU, you can run the following command:

qemu-system-x86_64 -cdrom /path/to/vitruvian-0.3.0-live.iso -m 768M -vga std

For example, on a Windows system (assuming that QEMU is in PATH), you can run the following command:

qemu-system-x86_64.exe -cdrom C:\path\to\vitruvian-0.3.0-live.iso -m 768M -vga std -accel whpx

After that, Vitruvian OS is booting up like this:

After a few seconds of waiting, the Vitruvian OS desktop has appeared.

However, it looks like that icons are not loading in many areas, such as desktop icons. Applications, however, work fine with almost no problems, except for Pairs, which reported that it needed icons but got none. The Clock app also seems to suffer from broken rendering due to the hands being duplicated.

The terminal is working fine, which is good.

On shutdown, some of the applications just don’t want to quit, even if all windows have been closed, so VitruvianOS 0.3 hangs on shut down when you open some of the programs, such as Pairs and Terminal.

Have you come across this?

VitruvianOS used the Linux Kernel but the uses it own window manager and is compatible with Haiku and BeOS apps 🙂

Vitruvian OS 0.3 has reached general availability!

A project, which was in development since 2019 with very little appearance, has shown up this week, with a very interesting project that the team behind it is so excited to announce.

This project is called Vitruvian OS, which combines the simplicity of BeOS (and Haiku) with the modernity of Linux to build an ultimate system intended to run BeOS applications under the Linux kernel! The entire infrastructure was built from scratch to run BeOS applications in a way that makes them behave like a native Linux application, using the Nexus wrapper.

Version 0.3 of the project is now available, and the team behind it has announced it publicly that the downloads are now available. They’ve described this version as a pilot release that is a proof of concept of the above idea, which is innovative.

From the optimized real-time Linux kernel with XFS and SquashFS boot support to the BeOS/Haiku API compatibility layer, as well as the whole Vitruvian environment with Deskbar and other core components, Vitruvian serves to be an OS that is fully compatible with BeOS and its applications.

The team has also provided a promising roadmap: 0.3.1 will include missing components, 0.3.2 will make Vitruvian OS be able to build itself, and 0.4 will bring genuine stability and ARM port.

You can download Vitruvian OS from the official GitHub page. You can also learn more about the release from the official website.
