Vitruvian OS 0.3 has reached general availability!

A project, which was in development since 2019 with very little appearance, has shown up this week, with a very interesting project that the team behind it is so excited to announce.

This project is called Vitruvian OS, which combines the simplicity of BeOS (and Haiku) with the modernity of Linux to build an ultimate system intended to run BeOS applications under the Linux kernel! The entire infrastructure was built from scratch to run BeOS applications in a way that makes them behave like a native Linux application, using the Nexus wrapper.

Version 0.3 of the project is now available, and the team behind it has announced it publicly that the downloads are now available. They’ve described this version as a pilot release that is a proof of concept of the above idea, which is innovative.

From the optimized real-time Linux kernel with XFS and SquashFS boot support to the BeOS/Haiku API compatibility layer, as well as the whole Vitruvian environment with Deskbar and other core components, Vitruvian serves to be an OS that is fully compatible with BeOS and its applications.

The team has also provided a promising roadmap: 0.3.1 will include missing components, 0.3.2 will make Vitruvian OS be able to build itself, and 0.4 will bring genuine stability and ARM port.

You can download Vitruvian OS from the official GitHub page. You can also learn more about the release from the official website.

“It’s worth noting that Vitruvian doesn’t use X Server or Wayland, and it doesn’t really depend on classic Linux desktop components. We do use essential stuff like udev and libseat for VT switching, but we’ve built our own graphics layer and display system from the ground up. “

VitruvianOS: because the world definitely needed yet another flavor of #Linux, but this time with a 🍋 twist of #BeOS #nostalgia. 🤔✨ It's like reinventing the wheel, but with more "intuitive" #interfaces because apparently, nobody thought of that before. 😂🔄
