Ceux qui parviennent à l'apercevoir sont bénis par la nature, car le râle de Virginie ne se montre qu'à ceux qui savent écouter le murmure du vent et le frémissement de l'eau. (Virginia rail)

I wouldn’t call myself a birder, but I do get excited when I see a new bird, and I get really excited when I find out it’s a rare sighting!

I was riding my bike near a marsh today, and I saw some little birds cross the trail. At first, I thought they were ducklings, but as I got closer, I realized they were something else that I didn’t recognize.

I pulled up the Merlin app, and it identified them as Virginia rails based on their sounds.

As I was watching them, a guy with binoculars walked up and confirmed that they were rails. He was really excited because they’re very shy, and it’s rare to see them, especially up close.

the other day was by far one of the most exciting birding days i've had in a long time. i was looking at a sora when this friend wandered out of the reeds right in front of me! i love marsh birds so much! so here's the Virginia Rail!

Sad postscript. Five minutes later and very close by I nearly stepped on the remains of another rail that had been predated but not eaten. Wonder if the first one was calling so vigorously seeking to find a new mate...

Love how cryptic Virginia Rails can be! This one was just banging away, KIDICK KIDICK, rattling my eardrums. I could localize exactly where it was, angled downward amid the cattails less than 5 meters away. But, nary a glimpse visually.
