I forgot what the little number above the note means (for example, the first note). I think it means "use your first finger" (so index finger), meaning I should shift my hand up to that position. Does that mean for the player to keep it in that position until told otherwise (so in this csse, until measure 8)?

Also what is the open circle thingy above the D in measures 4 and 5?. I thought that meant "open string" but that's not open... stringable on a viola.
