The man, identified as Jugal Sudhir Daterao and whose nationality was not specified, was arrested upon arrival from Qatar on charges of attempting to smuggle narcotics at Sheremetyevo Airport in the Russian capital.

Drug hidden in jam

The man had landed in Russia from Qatar in January 2026. He was stopped for a security check in the green channel, where narcotics-containing jam was found in his luggage. In court, he claimed that the drugs had been prescribed to him by a doctor in the United States to manage the effects of a brain surgery. Sudhir manages over 20 projects at The Walt Disney Company, according to Tass.

Detention of foreign nationals in Russia

Since the beginning of the large-scale offensive in Ukraine in 2022, Russia has arrested several foreign nationals for various reasons. American basketball player Brittney Griner was sentenced in 2022 to nine years in prison for possession of a vaporizer and cannabis liquid, a prohibited product in Russia but legal in the United States. She was finally released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap with Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Viktor Bout just one of the world’s arms dealers, sold weaponry to “rogue states”rebel groups and murderous warlords in Africa, Asia and South America. (His notoriety was such that his life helped inspire a Hollywood film, 2005’s Lord of War, starring Nicolas Cage as Yuri Orlov, an arms dealer loosely based on Bout.)

My latest for Cannabis Now Magazine... a look at the politics and ethics of trading personal-possession cannabis defendant and good-vibes liberation icon #BrittneyGriner for #DeathMerchant #ViktorBout. Yes, Bout is a baddie, but GOP exploitation of the issue (as they connive with Putin in bottlenecking Ukraine aid!) is ultra-cynical. Meanwhile, there are thousands of "wrongfully detained" #cannabis defendants here in the USA. Lest we forget. https://cannabisnow.com/even-free-brittney-griner-remains-a-political-pawn/
Even Free, Brittney Griner Remains a Political Pawn

It’s a fairly open secret that Brittney Griner was Putin’s geopolitical pawn when she was in Russian detention for nine months on a minor cannabis charge. But due to the GOP’s blame-first strategy, Griner remains a target even now.

A little late to the game here, but a piece on the #BrittneyGriner-#ViktorBout release, the politics of prisoner swaps, and why cutting short the sentences of miscreants like Bout and the “Narco Nephews” is an inevitable cost of a getting detained Americans back home. https://t.co/wP60mpUi93
