time to pay my motor reg — there are no BPay details on the notice, i must, apparently,
— have/ use mastercard or visa (i don’t “do” phone calls easily, but can i even pay this by phone?) or…
— use the vic roads app

EDIT actually prefer to transfer money by direct credit online than to put yet one more bloody visa number “out there”, so the visa requirement is even more ridiculous from a security viewpoint

there is a lot of guff on the app about how much vic riads cares about my privacy, and how secure the app is.
and some other stuff about digital driver’s licences
and a whole lot of stuff about QR codes 🙄

i only know enough about IT to know not to trust links of any description, or QR codes

the less i understand about change, and the more i understand about how performatively clueless some (#NotAll) IT people are, the more frightened/frustrated i become

why do i resent vic roads pushing me to use a phone app to pay my rego? because they want me to accept their assurances about my data privacy, and accept terms and conditions that are a bit too “our bad so sad” for my liking.

our phone numbers are fast becoming our identity card, as well as essential to security in banking etc.
i once had a(n expensive) windows phone die on me for no discernible reason, while i was miles from home, and it took me six weeks to resolve issues while retaining control of my own phone number. luckily (i had the cash to buy an apple phone to try and work my way thru the nightmare.)

(this is why i keep a little paper book of codes instead of relying on any kind of software to keep passcodes safe — cos the foolproof back up system failed)
