Half a Year's Rain in Days: Mildura Braces as Floods Grip Victoria's North

Mildura has received close to half its annual rainfall in days as a rare tropical low drives flash flooding across Victoria's northwest and inland Australia.

The Daily Perspective

“Bummer! Sewerage spill in Merri Creek #floodwaters. We don’t go paddling anyway, but this adds to the reason not to paddle in the creek (or Port Philip) at the moment. 🐶🐶

Floodwaters have gone down enough to use the #WesternRingRoadTrail, but you might get splashed. W#e chose not to follow.."

There have been 54 #Flood rescues of people in cars being washed away in #floodwaters over roads in the #VicFloods since Sunday. This is despite repeated warnings from State Emergency Services (SES) not to drive into floodwaters and that it takes as little as 15cm of water for cars to start floating.

I really do despair at the sense of people who endanger not only their own life, but the lives of rescuers. SES rescuers deserve 🎖️ medals.

PM flags consideration of dedicated force for natural disaster responses amid climate crisis

On recent floods in Victoria and Queensland, Albanese said Australian defence force was a vital asset but that future recovery mitigation may need a re-think

The Guardian

Daily extreme Rainfall for 8 December Victoria had in area 86.9% at > 97th percentile, 66.4% at > 99th percentile, and 5.4% at Highest on record.

The rain has now moved north and east but the #VicFloods event continues especially the towns of Yea, Seymour, Rochester.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said climate change is a major reason for these floods, and extreme weather events must be factored in when planning for new housing and communities.

Premier Allan also says the Victorian Government is "undeterred" in pursuing clean energy projects despite the Federal Government's rejection of a new hub at the Port of Hastings for the construction of offshore wind farms.

So we have the Premier making the Extreme rain/Floods link with climate change, while most media stories have ignored making the connection.
