USA Crisis Lines - advocacy

I have an invited commentary pending with a journal that contains very damaging facts for several authors & #CrisisTextLine. Seemingly stalled indefinitely. Initial letter to journal written Nov. 2021. Not sure what to do. Are Crisis Text Line or authors w/ clout pulling strings?

I submitted an #FOIA to #SAMHSA on Aug 15, 2022. They STILL haven't provided responsive docs. First they sent me on wild goose chase to #VibrantEmotionalHealth, a private corp & their grantee administrator of #988Lifeline, whose public info person provided me with nothing. I had to appeal SAMHSA, they changed their mind, but have drifted through all self-imposed deadlines & still nothing.

I won't outlive these agencies, but maybe my website will. I'm planning to add an accountability page, where I'll post all these fruitless exchanges w/ agencies & individual gatekeepers or whatever they are, for researchers/journalists.

Cyrano de Bergerac approach to #CrisisLines care is coming.The software "AI" LLM will feed the volunteer their lines with the "probably right thing to say", based on calibration off unethically sourced data. Complete with probabilities of success, real-time effectiveness scores.

The privatization of crisis care is here #CrisisLineIndustry. Data-driven has its good side. What disturbs me is these are thieves of data from all those sensitive, private words, without consent, into private sector " #AI " systems. USA has closely aligned private to #988Lifeline.

Dr. John Draper was w/ #VibrantEmotionalHealth for years (#SAMHSA 's grantee contractor for #988Lifeline), is now President of Research & Development at #BehavioralHealthLink, which is researching so-called sentiment analysis & operates #GCAL (Georgia).

references at bottom of article. I worry about this #AIHype, harms it can bring to vulnerable + profit motive.

I believe that crisis line conversations, and the people that have them, should be protected from exploitation. "Use" of the conversations afterwards, without informed, meaningful #consent, is exploitation.

Some of the "uses" include perpetual storage (for future exploitation), and in-house algorithms reporting "effectiveness"; and I suspect: calibration of so-called sentiment detection algorithms, "AI"-type so-called predictors of risk.

I'm trying to locate the sources of data that certain companies, such as #BehavioralHealthLink and #VibrantEmotionalHealth are using and in US we have a problem where private corporations contract with government agencies, shielding themselves with proprietary software claims, shielding as not being subject to public record laws. It can be unraveled but it's going to take an organized effort, many more people, and time. For awareness. #NLP " #AI "

After pursuing this federal US SAMHSA FOIA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Freedom of Information Act) request for 8 months, I filed an appeal for lack of response.

If you trust that #SAMHSA and its non-profit grantee #VibrantEmotionalHealth (administering USA #988Lifeline national crisis line system) are caring for people in crisis, you should see them stiff-arm me on legitimate requests for info about the service & private non-profit #CrisisTextLine. Shameful, discouraging, sad. Woeful systems of "care" in USA. Will make public when I can.

This was an #FOIA to SAMHSA and "pretty please" requests to private corporation Vibrant ($48M USD in gov't contract for 988 in 2021, $103M total gov't contracts 2022). Private corps not subject to Freedom of Information Act = accountability shield. What a lack of accountability in a system that is supposed to be serving people at their most vulnerable and powerless moments. I'm not giving up!

I believe there is going to be (and already is) intense pressure for access to crisis conversations as data. Rationalized by de-identifying. This will be justified as helping people in crisis. Driving force will be monetizing & training models for #Bioinformatics, so-called #AI, #HealthBots #MentalHealth screening #Suicide #Depression screening, #Surveillance.

My advocacy is for #Consent and #RespectForPersons. These conversations should be off-limits except for human quality control. Then delete them after say 6 months.

Even research on such sensitive conversations should have consent, including from volunteers. Not possible in crisis moments.

Non-profit corporations in US already have access to the data in-house. Largely unregulated. #CrisisTextLine #TheTrevorProject #VibrantEmotionalHealth (administrator of #988Lifeline).

To overcome the powerful attraction for the data, will require organizing & resistance. On the horizon. Thanks for listening.

Asking for recommendation for secure group chat.

Are there any end-to-end encrypted, easily accessible platforms for group chats? This would be for peer-to-peer support, highly sensitive conversations.

#VibrantEmotionalHealth a USA #nonprofit which administers the USA #CrisisLines network #988Lifeline is using #Facebook to host a support site for pandemic survivors and responders. This is wonderful, except for the platform.

Before advocating to move this off a #Meta - owned site, I'd love to have an alternative. #Discord does not use E2E encryption at this time, is my understanding, just encryption. Thanks.
