Saw this extremely convincing wasp-mimicking hoverfly, _Spilomyia_ (https://bugguide.net/node/view/3288), on the goldenrod in the garden today! Then on the way to the store saw plenty of the "model", _Ancistrocerus_ wasps (https://bugguide.net/node/view/6812), also on goldenrod.

Vespa crabro Linnaeus, 1758 ♀

Specimen was captured in July 2023 in the Ardennes region, France. Sad we had to kill it but having a hornet nest right next to the house was just too meh :(

This pic is also made using the focus-stack technique, DIY hardware only.

And in rather less welcome back garden insect news, I'm pretty sure that this is an Asian hornet (Vespa velutina).

It's an invasive species that's thought to have arrived in France in boxes of pottery in 2004 & has been spreading through Europe since, killing & eating the native honeybee population along the way.

They're supposed to be reported & I've just done that.

Also, honey wasps are really amazing looking animals. They're as if you gave yellow jackets a week to become honey bees, and they tried their best, bless their hearts.

Bald-faced hornet? It was very buzzy.

Rare photo of developing larvae inside a nest of Mexican honey wasps, Brachygastra mellifica.

Pretty sure this is a European hornet (Vespa crabro).

At this time of the year, it should be a queen, searching for food for the larvae.

I caught her, after being trapped in my room for a couple of minutes. She couldn't find a way out and always wanted to leave through the ceiling. When she sat down for a couple of seconds, I cautiously trapped her inside a glass.

Photo is not good, because I wanted to hurry up to release her outside.

One of my favorite local insects is the Mexican honey wasp Brachygastra mellifica, a relative of hornets that makes and stores honey.

Earlier this week I took a new photo of a live nest, in cutaway, thanks to Jo-anne Holley's research lab here at UT.
