What these worms do will TRANSFORM your garden: In-Bed Vermicomposting

YouTube

These dendrabaena worms from the existing wormery were added to the worm box the winter before last.

I had nowhere I could store the old wormery either out of the summer heat or inside out of the winter cold.

The best thing was allowing the worms to come and go as they please and to find more comfortable conditions deeper in the soil.

Enough worms are there to process the food scraps provided I keep adding food regularly. #GrowYourOwn #Worms #Compost #Allotment #Vermicast

@kashcah Yes, I feed the worms with food scraps throughout the year. Sometimes with well fermented pre-bokashi compost but mostly with normal food scraps. I just have the one worm box buried in the plot. It’s buried approx 45 cm/18” deep.

The box has no bottom just one centre brace. It is just four sides with a lid.

I harvest wormcast whenever I need some for the seedling mix or for making a wormcast extract or for adding to the growing beds.

If I could give only one piece of advice about how to setup a worm bin.

Don't overfeed it.

Let the worms the time to consume the food and feed them about 2 times a week the volume of food they need.

Not doing this will attract unwanted visitors to your bin.

A lot of pepper #seeds have sprouted in a #worm bin, the moisture, temperature, and nutrients made those seeds germinate because I keep the worm casting shallow. The #worms love it.

I have learned from the youtube channel Plant Obsessed that avocado seeds love to germinate in worm bins.

January is the moment to start a #worm bin if you want to have some #vermicast for #spring and #seedlings.

It takes about 3 months for a bin to be ready to harvest.

Then you can either do aerated #compost #tea or apply the casting on your beds.

Working on gathering organic matter to create a new #CompostAtHome bin for the #newyear

The goal of this bin will be to have #compost for making a potting mix to start #seeds #indoors.

Greens will be leaves of lettuce and arugula leaves of plants that were damaged by the winter storm. Browns will be wood chips, and maple tree leaves. The compost will be made of #vermicast and harvested compost at home bins.

Because it will soon be the time to start #seeds #indoors, I wanted to share my #PottingMix recipe for #seedlings:
#worm casting 1 volume
#compost 1 volume
#garden soil 1 volume

The #vermicast keeps the mixture moist and helps the #seed germinate faster.
The compost is made with more #carbon and #WoodChips to give a good texture
The garden #soil helps the #seedling not have a #transplant issues.

@compost

Leachate is the result of the excess moisture that you can collect from a #worm bin

The main problem that you will have from it is that there is a good chance that this liquid will be anaerobic. Bad #bacteria have developed in this liquid because it has been standing for too long without oxygen.

To avoid this issue it is best to adjust the amount of water in your worm bin and have no #leachate.
