Justin Verlander (#35) is back in Detroit for a final season! Love this. Sure, at 43 he’s not going to have a record season, but hoping he has some good innings and brings his extraordinary leadership to the team. As a decades-long fan, I’m excited to see him back in a Tigers uniform.

Justin Verlander wound up giving up 5 runs altogether. I was looking at his pitches. Their speeds were fine. He placed an abundance of them inside of the strike zone. I don't think he meant to do that, exactly.

While I have you here, velocity is speed + direction. It is a vector, not a scalar. When baseball people speak of a pitcher's velocity, they typically mean the scalar "speed of the pitch."

His general velocity sucked, not because he couldn't hurl a large marble fast enough, but because he wasn't placing the marble around the strike zone very well, and he got hit today, big-time.

He's a #5 starting pitcher now, with a mid-to-high-4's ERA. Aka, his good stuff is inconsistent.

Just a personal reflection on the amazing start to the Giant's season this year at 15-8 who nonetheless are currently 1 game behind the #Padres & #Dodgers who are tied for 1st at 16-7.🤷‍♂️

Thing is, the Giants could be tied with them at 16-7 but for #Walker's rare meltdown & blown save that cost the Giants & #Verlander the win vs the #Angels the other day 🤦‍♂️

And the Giants could actually be ahead at 17-6 in 1st place but for the failure of the Giants hitters to score 3 runs to back up #LoganWebb's otherwise great start giving up only 4 hits & 2 runs in 6 innings with 12ks & no walks vs the Angels a couple of days before that. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Nonetheless, the Giants are playing above expectations with one of the lowest team batting averages in the league (22nd out of 30) at only .226 but with the 6th best team ERA in the league at 3.46 .👏👏👏

An excellent outing by #Verlander who leaves the game at the end of the 6th with 3-1 lead giving up only 2 hits & 1 run (on a solo HR) with only 2 BBs vs 6Ks on 98 pitches thrown (64 of them strikes).

This is the Verlander all of us Giants fans hope we'd see in the twilight of his career. It was vintage Verlander & the type of outing that will justify his election in the #HOF when the time comes.

Now it's up to the relief staff to secure the win for him & for the team.

Giants have left too many runners in scoring position & fail again to score a runner from 2nd in the top of the 5th &, of course, #Verlander gives up a solo HR in the bottom of the 5th to allow the #Angels to tie the game at 1 going into the top of the 6th with the Giants coming up to bat again. 🙄

Oh well . . . this is Verlander's best start so far this season but he can't get the win unless the Giants score more runs & they're running out of innings. 😐

#Verlander made it thru the 3rd giving up no runs, no hits with 2ks & no BBs on 31 pitches thrown (22 of them for strikes). 👏👏👏

Here's hoping that Verlander has finally found his "stuff" & can keep it up thru the 5th, 6th or 7th.

And here's hoping that the Giants' hitters to get a few runs for the win & not do to Verlander what they did to #Webb the other day. 🙄

#Verlander having trouble again in the 3rd. #Reds lead 5-0 with only 1 out & a running on 1st. Pitching coach is coming out to "talk" w/Verlander but IMO he should just come out.

#HOF eligible or not. Verlander isn't what he once was.

Guess I can stop watching the game now & hope that the Giants comeback somehow when I check on the results later.

Oh well . . . 🤷‍♂️
