Roaming Charges: Preliminary Notes on a Kidnapping
The cocksure boast that the US will "run" Venezuela appears to be another Trumpian fantasy. It’s impossible to “run a country,” if you don’t have control of it, which the US doesn’t by any measure. The Maduro government remains in place and defiant, even with Maduro renditioned to New York City. Indeed, the attack appears to have only strengthened the resolve of the Venezuelan people, instead of inspiring the chimerical uprising Rubio led Trump to expect, much as Rumsfeld and Cheney deceived Bush into believing about Iraq.

2025 Nobel Peace Prize for Anti-Maduro Leader MarĂa Corina Machado “Opposite of Peace”: Greg Grandin
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to MarĂa Corina Machado, a leading Venezuelan opposition figure. Machado was set to run for president last year, but she was disqualified by the government of President Nicolás Maduro, with fellow opposition leader Edmundo González standing in for her. Venezuela’s National Electoral Council ultimately declared Maduro the winner of the contested election, and he was sworn in for his third term in January.

Friday’s Nobel announcement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has openly campaigned for the award.

As Tension over Venezuelan Election Escalates, the Left Debates Who Won Contested Vote
In Venezuela, tensions are rising over the contested results of last Sunday’s presidential election. In the latest developments, opposition candidate Edmundo González published a count of thousands of vote tally sheets alleging that he received more votes than sitting President Nicolás Maduro, who is claiming to have secured a third term fairly. Protesters from both sides have taken to the streets; more than a dozen have been killed by Venezuelan armed forces. Maduro has called for a “new revolution” if the U.S. and other foreign actors continue to back his opposition and dispute the integrity of the election. We hear opinions from both camps on the show today. “There’s no doubt that Maduro lost these elections,” says Venezuelan sociologist Edgardo Lander, who contends that sufficient evidence of Maduro’s win “that’s expected and established by the law is completely absent,” while legal scholar Nina Farnia, who served as electoral observer in this year’s election, says she witnessed a “free and fair election process” and supports the Electoral Council’s decision.
