Repeating a question I asked years ago, thinking that the Mastodon hive mind has grown. In the mid-1990s I read an essay by or interview of #VáclavHavel in which he addressed the question how they moved toward democracy so quickly. He said something like "because we spent years talking together when we knew talking wouldn't make any difference." This was in a published collection. Can anyone help me find it? Please boost for broader exposure.

@theseeduneed @noelreports "In the 1996 novella Unlocking the Air by American science fiction author Ursula K. Le Guin the jangling of keys play a central role in the liberation of a fictional country call Orsinia. Here the action signaled that the locks of oppression were being undone and that the "air of freedom" was being released."

The #VelvetRevolution began on #ThisDayInHistory in 1989. Riot police violently attacked a student protest in #Prague, but numbers went up, reaching half a million on the 20th. #CommunistParty leaders of Czechoslovakia resigned on 24th & announced it would cede power on the 28th.
On this day, 36 years ago, the #VelvetRevolution began.

Students gathered in Prague and demanded more democracy.

A peaceful movement that changed the course of history — and still inspires Europe today.
Happy #VelvetRevolution day to all who celebrate :) 🇨🇿🇸🇰🇪🇺

I just learned about the background of rattling with keys. It is much more than just "some" sign of disapproval.

"Among the massive demonstrations, strikes, and public speeches associated with Czechia’s 1989 Velvet Revolution, perhaps no other sight or sound stands out more than the widespread jingling of keys."

Unlocking freedom: The symbolism of jingling keys during the Velvet Revolution

Although a simple gesture, the shaking of keys is now seen as an iconic part of Czechia’s 1989 revolution that ousted the communist regime.

🕊️✊ In 1989, the Velvet Revolution turned quiet defiance into democratic power.

Peaceful unity can transform history.

The Velvet Revolution and Peaceful Power
