Donald Trump ha risposto duramente agli appelli alla pace di Papa Leone XIV, lanciando un attacco frontale senza precedenti contro il pontefice. Il presidente statunitense si è scagliato contro Leone XIV, affermando di non essere “un suo grande fan” perché “è una persona molto liberale ed è un uomo che non crede nella lotta contro la criminalità”.
Il tycoon ha poi puntato il dito contro il Papa, sostenendo che voglia “giocare con un Paese che intende dotarsi dell’arma nucleare”, in riferimento all’Iran, arrivando ad accusarlo implicitamente di sostenere il programma nucleare di Teheran.
“Non voglio un Papa che critica il presidente degli Stati Uniti, perché sto facendo esattamente ciò per cui sono stato eletto, IN MODO SCHIACCIANTE: ridurre la criminalità a livelli storicamente bassi e creare il più grande mercato azionario della storia”, ha scritto il leader repubblicano, ormai da tempo in aperto contrasto con Leone XIV.

Ma non è tutto. Trump ha aggiunto che “Leone dovrebbe essermi grato perché, come tutti sanno, la sua nomina è stata una sorpresa sconcertante. Non figurava in nessuna lista dei papabili ed è stato scelto dalla Chiesa esclusivamente perché americano; si riteneva, infatti, che fosse il modo migliore per gestire il rapporto con il presidente Donald J. Trump”.
Parole poi ribadite sui social, dove ha pubblicato un’immagine generata con l’intelligenza artificiale in cui appare con un’aura divina, nell’atto di guarire un infermo, accompagnandola con un’ulteriore affermazione provocatoria: “Se io non fossi alla Casa Bianca, Leone non sarebbe in Vaticano”.
Alle dichiarazioni del presidente ha risposto lo stesso Papa Leone XIV, mantenendo toni pacati ma fermi: “Non ho paura dell’amministrazione Trump, non ho intenzione di fare un dibattito con lui, non sono un politico. Il mio messaggio è sempre lo stesso: la pace”.

Donald Trump responded harshly to Pope Leo XIV’s calls for peace, launching an unprecedented frontal attack against the pontiff. The U.S. president lashed out at Leo XIV, stating that he was not “a great fan” because “he is a very liberal person and he doesn’t believe in fighting crime.”
The tycoon then pointed a finger at the Pope, claiming that he wanted to “play with a country that intends to acquire nuclear weapons,” referring to Iran, and implicitly accusing him of supporting Iran’s nuclear program.
“I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States, because I am doing exactly what I was elected for, in a SHOCKING manner: reducing crime to historically low levels and creating the largest stock market in history,” wrote the Republican leader, long in open opposition to Leo XIV.
But that’s not all. Trump added that “Leo should be grateful to me because, as everyone knows, his appointment was a shocking surprise. He wasn’t on any lists of potential popes and he was chosen by the Church exclusively because he is American; it was believed to be the best way to manage relations with President Donald J. Trump.”
Words then reiterated on social media, where he published an AI-generated image in which he appears with a divine aura, healing a sick person, accompanied by another provocative statement: “If I weren’t at the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in Vatican City.”
The president’s statements were answered by Pope Leo XIV himself, maintaining calm but firm tones: “I have no fear of the Trump administration, I have no intention of debating with him, I am not a politician. My message is always the same: peace.”

Il Tempo: "Chi ha il potere di scatenare guerre scelga la pace". L'appello di Papa Leone
Un appello ai potenti che hanno il potere di scatenare le guerre a deporre le armi per scegliere la pace, l'esortazione a non restare indifferenti davanti al male e alla violenza e l'annuncio di una veglia di preghiera per la pace che si terrà sabato 11 aprile. Papa Leone XIV si è affacciato dalla Loggia centrale della basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano per il messaggio pasquale e la benedizione "Urbi et Orbi".
Nel messaggio, pronunciato alla presenza di circa 50 mila fedeli, il Pontefice ha esortato ad arrivare a un cambiamento necessario in un mondo insanguinato dalla guerra. "Nella luce della Pasqua, lasciamoci stupire da Cristo! Lasciamoci cambiare il cuore dal suo immenso amore per noi! Chi ha in mano armi le deponga! Chi ha il potere di scatenare guerre, scelga la pace! Non una pace perseguìta con la forza, ma con il dialogo! Non con la volontà di dominare l'altro, ma di incontrarlo!", ha affermato Prevost che, ricordando anche le parole di Papa Francesco nel suo ultimo messaggio "Urbi et Orbi" di un anno fa, è tornato su un concetto denunciato dal suo predecessore, la "globalizzazione dell'indifferenza". Una tendenza che, ha ricordato il Papa, non può e non deve prevalere: "Tutti abbiamo paura della morte e per paura ci voltiamo dall'altra parte, preferiamo non guardare. Non possiamo continuare a essere indifferenti! E non possiamo rassegnarci al male!". "Ci stiamo abituando alla violenza, ci rassegniamo a essa e diventiamo indifferenti - ha rimarcato il Papa - Indifferenti alla morte di migliaia di persone. Indifferenti alle ricadute di odio e divisione che i conflitti seminano. Indifferenti alle conseguenze economiche e sociali che essi producono e che pure tutti avvertiamo".
Appelli che si sono tradotti in un'azione concreta: "Facciamo udire il grido di pace che sgorga dal cuore! Per questo, invito tutti a unirsi a me nella veglia di preghiera per la pace che celebreremo qui in piazza San Pietro il prossimo sabato, 11 aprile". Nel giorno di Pasqua, Papa Leone continua, dunque, a tessere la tela della pace perché, come sottolineato nell'omelia della messa presieduta in piazza San Pietro, la morte, pur essendo sempre "in agguato", non è "il destino ultimo della nostra vita.

Appeals that were translated into concrete action: “Let us make heard the cry of peace that springs from the heart!
