Doctor Who - Lux Review - Pop Culture Maniacs

The Doctor and Belinda head back to 1952 and run into a cartoon caper that tests their understanding of reality.

Pop Culture Maniacs
I liked this one. :)

Yes, it's a Russell T script. I am not unkind. Sometimes he can write very well, and this is one of those times.

The 2023 reboot has focused on a more fantastical pantheon of villains than in the past, and yet another God shows up for our chum The Doctor to knock down again. This time it's a cartoon come to terrible horrible life, though it doesn't actually kill anyone, for a welcome change, merely
threatens global thermonuclear holocaust.

For the second episode in a row Belinda Chandra
shines. Fresh from being kidnapped by circumstance she's adapting rather easily to the Doctor's lifestyle but I can easily forgive her that when her acting is still top notch and she's a decidedly magnetic presence on-screen, much needed when playing against the charisma-supernova that is Gatwa.

1950s America is presented well, and with just the right amount of acknowledgement towards its still very bigoted status, not dwelling on it or devolving into Lecture, but not shying away from it either.

The villain is consistently entertaining throughout, adopting an almost Billy West (Futurama: Fry) style timbre which I found very endearing. Side-characters play their parts well, including the very meta trio. I have one of those scarves, sir. Very well played. :) While I'm talking meta, the sequence of being trapped within the film is not wildly original but is nicely done, and doesn't over-stay.

...and speaking of over-staying, Mrs Flood/Granny FourthWall makes another appearance, deepening her "mystery" ever so slightly. I still
really don't care about her, and it appears hopes for a snappy resolution are gone as this is clearly Arc Plot. Bah.

Oh, and my one big gripe of the episode. ANOTHER hidden-in-plain-sight word game. Jesus, Russell,
give it a rest.

The effects are surprisingly good though I got a laugh noting how quickly the more expensive-to-realise form of the villain reverts back to the cheaper. Good old Who. :)

Some people are calling this scary; I must be too old for that, but I can imagine some younger viewers getting a bit wibbly over some parts.

I wasn't convinced about the new fantastical focus but I am slowly warming to it. And I can't argue when efforts are as solidly watchable and enjoyable as Lux very much is.

Next week: back to my favoured sci-fi colony stories! Which means it's likely rubbish. :D

Watched this yesterday with my brother. Couple of initial thoughts

Did they play the “killed power to the whole hospital” as a “whoopsie!” scene for a quick laugh? They even put in the beeeeeeeeep of a life support machine as someone literally died. How many others did the Doctor just kill? Hilarious? I think not.

Don’t vaporise the cat. Are you trying to upset me?

Still not sold on Mrs Flood (and the breaking of the fourth wall), but if she’s Belinda’s next door neighbour, does that mean Belinda lives two doors down from Ruby?

Right, those are the quickies that sprang to mind. The rest of the episode was pretty much fine. Typical Who stuff. A bunch of redshirts who get killed, the Doctor does a Clever (the ninth word thing), there’s a ridiculous twist (“planet of the incels”) and it all gets wrapped up with a small question left over (how did they get the certificate in the first place?)

Fifteen is still great, I liked Belinda and especially the way she prepared to immediately call him out on how he’s dangerous and doesn’t respect people’s boundaries. Maybe she’ll be good for him, as a reluctant companion. I look forward to the rest of the season. Plus… “timey wimey? Am I six?” 🤣

Oh, and one final thing about time travel that’s bugged me before - if they can’t get to May 24th, why not just go to May 23rd and wait a day? Not a biggie, but it seems an easy solution to me…

Anyway. I’ve avoided recent trailers and didn’t watch the “next time” preview, so hopefully I’ll go into next weeks blind…
