Vancouver Public Library, taking your knowledge to greater heights.

One of my fav places. I just recently rediscovered the joy of spending time there after not going for so long.
They offer so many great free events and workshops. And I love hanging out there to work on my creative projects.
Public libraries are the best! And the VPL central branch is an architectural gem on top of it!

News for the #library enthusiasts on here:

#VancouverPublicLibrary are banning the wearing of pins depicting watermelons (as well as keffiyehs).

From this well-written article it seems some apparent that outgoing Chief Librarian and CEO of the VPL, Christina de Castell, mayor Ken Sim and his party, the Diamond Foundation, and the Wosk family bear responsibility/influence for this decision.

A neat new (old) thing at my library is the launch of the VPL Virtual Vault, providing access to rare and historical books digitized from our collection.

"In partnership with Internet Archive Canada, a trained technician has been using a special machine called the Scribe to scan unique and historically valuable books and documents page by page."

Creator Series: Writing for Video Games with Jaclyn Seto and Ray Clark

Did you know that the video gaming industry is the world's largest entertainment sector globally, surpassing film, television, and music combined? Vancouver is a hub of cutting-edge video game development, and this is your chance to explore this dynamic field. If you’ve ever wondered about writing for video games, join us for an inspiring session featuring Jaclyn Seto, writer from Respawn Entertainment and Vancouver Film School graduate, and Ray Clark, an independent game developer and UBC instructor. They will guide you through the essentials of getting started in video game writing and share insights into intriguing topics like live service games and more. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the end of the event. -- Jaclyn Seto (she/her) is a Chinese Canadian writer with experience in AAA and mobile games. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in Kinesiology and worked as a kinesiologist and medical writer for a number of years before deciding to pursue her dream of writing for video games. She graduated from the Writing for Film, Television & Games program at Vancouver Film School (VFS) in 2020 and was the recipient of the Academic Achievement Award. She has since returned to VFS as an instructor and student mentor. Ray Clark is an independent game developer, working in video games, card games, and board games. As a writer, their focus is the unique intersection of narrative and systems found in games, and the structures of the stories that emerge from that intersection. Ray is a graduate of the Creative Writing BFA and MFA programs at the University of British Columbia, where they currently teach writing for video games and for new media. Their independent work is published on Steam and itch.io, and they also assist US-based board game publisher Plaid Hat Games in testing, editing, and development. ---This event will take place in the Montalbano Family Theatre on Level 8 of the Central Library. --- Please register. Registration is not required to attend, but it helps us anticipate attendance and send a reminder the day before the event, or any updates about this program.
