Common valerian (Valeriana officinalis, Echter Baldrian) is a tall, perennial herb native to Europe and parts of Asia. It typically grows up to 1.5 meters high, with hollow, upright stems, divided pinnate leaves, and umbrella-shaped clusters of tiny pale pink to white flowers that bloom in summer. Found in moist meadows, streambanks, and forest edges, valerian is an important native species in temperate ecosystems.
Ecologically, common valerian provides valuable nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, especially in semi-natural or meadow habitats. Archaeologists found pyramids, sports fields, causeways connecting districts and amphitheatres in the southeastern state of Campeche.
