Ci sono alcuni posti che quando li vedi, anche dopo cento volte, è sempre come la prima: opere d’arte, quadri della realtà. Pienza, la città perfetta #valdorcia
Val d'Orcia is a landscape designed by history and perfected by the light of the setting sun 🌅

Walking through this part of Tuscany feels like moving through a gallery of art. During the Renaissance, the merchants of Siena transformed these clay hills into an idealized version of nature, planting the iconic cypress trees to mark property lines and windbreaks while maintaining a sense of aesthetic grace. The result is a repeating pattern of golden wheat fields and soft ridges that seem to glow when the sun hits the horizon.

These hills change colors completely with the seasons—from vibrant, neon green in the spring to this deep, burnt gold in the late summer and autumn. It is a place where time slows down to the speed of a shadow moving across a field.

Practical Tip: To capture the iconic "Tuscan glow" seen in this photo, aim for the "Golden Hour" roughly 45 minutes before sunset. Long focal lengths (70-200mm) work best here to compress the layers of the hills and make the distant cypress-lined villas stand out against the blue mountain backdrops 📸

The rolling hills of Val d'Orcia are a living Renaissance painting 🎨

This landscape was redesigned in the 14th century to reflect the "Sienese" ideal of harmony. Every row of cypress trees and golden curve was intentional, creating a vista so perfect that UNESCO protected the entire valley. It is one of the few places where man-made agriculture and nature exist in total, flawless balance 🌿

Siena rising from the Tuscan hills on the road to Val d’Orcia 🇮🇹

I was on my way to Val d’Orcia—the most picturesque part of Tuscany. I found myself stopping often, every time a new landscape begged to be immortalized. In this frame, you can see Siena in the distance. This city is a maze of ancient streets and historic buildings, anchored by the famous Piazza del Campo and, of course, the Duomo di Siena.

If you’re ever nearby, go there; you won’t regret it. The Cathedral is, in my opinion, the best example of the Tuscan Gothic architectural style. The way the city sits perched above the rolling clay hills (the Crete Senesi) creates a timeless silhouette that photographers have loved for centuries.

Practical Tip: To get this kind of compressed perspective where the city feels nestled in the landscape, use a telephoto lens (70-200mm or higher). The rolling hills of Tuscany are vast, and a wide-angle lens can sometimes make a city like Siena look too small in the frame. Look for pull-off points along the SR2 road for some of the best vantage points of the skyline before you head deeper into the valley 📸

A distant view of Siena, the jewel of Tuscany 🇮🇹

On my way to Val d’Orcia, I couldn't help but stop for this skyline. Siena is a city of narrow medieval streets and the iconic Piazza del Campo. Its Cathedral is perhaps the finest example of Tuscan Gothic architecture in Italy. It’s a must-visit if you're nearby 🏛️

This is Pienza, one of the most beautiful towns in Val d’Orcia. It is located on a hill which makes it a perfect spot to see all littles towns, villas and fields around it. The views are astonishing. Because of this, there are many photos taken *from* Pienza but not so many *of* Pienza. That’s why I wanted to post this photo.

Tuscany paths made for wandering.

I was driving around the most beautiful spots of Val d’Orcia. This house is known by many of us. A very popular spot and yet, very quiet. It was a day full of contrasts. The weather was changing rapidly and all the time. The rainy clouds were coming and going, so were the sunrays. I took many shots as with each moment the light was different.
