john lehetLooking back, the ice storm of ‘98 was only a half inch, though maybe more at higher elevations. High elevations looked like they had been bombed. Every tree broken and down. Last really bad ice storm I remember was in 2007 I think, also a half inch. We had just moved into this house, didn’t have a generator, was not ready for it. Power was out for 8 days. #vermont #newhampshire #VT #NH
Northern New Englanders, 1/4 to a half inch of ice coming. And we just got two or three inches of snow. To plow this or not? Plow, and the ice freezes on the cold driveway for sure. If I try plowing the snow later the range of options go between rain soaking into all the snow to make a thick slab of ice, or it crusts on top, and I can push that away. Strategy? Crystal Balls?
I am going to add another five gallons of gasoline to have on hand for the generator.

Very few people in #Vermont #VT seem to be interested in doing their civic duty and clearing at least their own portion of the walkways.
It turns out there was a lot less snow that I thought, only about an inch. My salt container is soaking wet from roof runoff (the building has no gutters, and it's a huge PITA), so i brought it inside to dry off, and will spread some salt later.

Social media fuels risky backcountry skiing in Vermont, rescue team says
Stowe Mountain Rescue in Vermont has noticed a troubling trend among skiers. Influenced by social media, inexperienced skiers are venturing out of bounds, getting lost and needing rescue. The team last month responded to a 911 call from two 19-year-olds lost on Mount Mansfield. They had followed social media videos to ski in the backcountry. The rescue chief says these skiers are often unprepared and lack spatial awareness. Stowe Mountain Rescue now handles about eight missions per season, up from around three about five years ago. The team plans to create social media posts to promote safe skiing practices.
