Now that #Dolby has launched a #patent lawsuit over #AV1, unless I'm mistaken we're about to have a repeat of the #Unisys #GIF patent situation where all #browser⁠s must remove support for widely-used image and video formats, namely AV1, #AVIF, #WebP, #WebM, #VP8, and #VP9.

This is really bad. The only other widely supported video codec is #MPEG-4 (which is also patented) and the only other widely supported lossy image format is #JPEG (which is rather inefficient).

What do we do?

@dalias Say you want the public to benefit from a video codec that's usable by free software in countries where MPEG-LA members hold patents. Would there have been a better way to go about this than how Google released WebM using On2's TrueMotion VP8?

iOS 17.4 est disponible et on note l'arrivée de plusieurs codecs audio et vidéo :
- #Vorbis (lancé en 2000)
- #VP8 (2008)
- #VP9 (2013)
- #Opus (2012)
Malheureusement, il y a des restrictions pour Vorbis et Opus

Il manque le conteneur Ogg utilisé par ces codecs audio, quand ils ne sont pas utilisés dans une vidéo WebM.
Ogg n'est pas encore pris en charge par iOS. Ce sera peut-être pour le 25éme anniversaire d'Ogg ?

Apple supporte VP9 à partir de iOS 17.4 (mars 2024)

I still remember when #Theora was the only video codec that @wikipedia could use due to licensing issues. It was like three or four times larger than the then-current H.264 equivalent file, and encoding quality was questionable at best. How fast does time pass, we've since gone through #VP8, #VP9 and now #AV1 is positioning itself as the ultimate video codec, trading blows more or less evenly with H.265. Oh and don't even get me started with the #Opus audio codec! Theora will be fondly remembered by the free software community.
