June 20, 1983, 43 years ago today: I reached down, dragged my head out of my butt and hiked respectably for the remainder of the day. At least, that is, until I reached the final steep one-and-a-half-mile descent to War Spur Shelter. The shin splints I picked up on Pearis Mountain are still there, and have become worse, particularly those afflicting my right leg.

June 20, 1983, 43 years ago today: I dragged into Pine Swamp Branch Shelter the previous night at 10:00, following my first (and, hopefully, last) night hike of the trip. I woke up late this morning, ate a quick cold breakfast, and booted my lazy butt out on the trail at 9:15. The days are becoming much too tropical for that kind of a late start.

Ivy Main Is Right - It's Not Acceptable (or Sustainable) for Virginia Legislators to "Pass the Buck on Concrete Data Center Reforms" - Blue Virginia

As always, Ivy Main makes really strong points, in this case about data center tax breaks, and I agree with the overwhelming majority of what she has to say – with just a few updates and quibbles with her on this topic. So, with that, see below for her key points, followed by my comments […]

Slavery in the DMV Was Ended by the Enslaved

President Lincoln often gets the credit for ending slavery and freeing roughly 3 million Black slaves in 1865 - but the truth is that it was mass resistance to slavery by the enslaved themselves that made the system untenable.

For more than two centuries, slavery was legal in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. By the time of the Civil War in 1861, more than 600,000 Black people across the region were held in bondage, while tens of thousands more free Blacks lived under the constant threat of being re-enslaved.

They did not abide silently. There was constant resistance to enslavement, from the daily sabotage of tools to running away and following the Underground Railroad to freedom in the North or to Canada. Slaves armed themselves and launched rebellions aimed at liberating themselves and others.

As the U.S. prepares to mark 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, the ruling class is intent on writing a whitewashed version of history. They pretend that slavery was a benign institution instead of a horrifically brutal system of forced labor that consumed millions of lives for profit by a wealthy few. That’s because they want to undo the gains made by the Black liberation struggle against the white supremacist system created to justify slavery.

Then as now - it is right to rebel!

Why VA Labor Movement Missed the Warning Signs on Governor Spanberger

The recent political uproar in Virginia has come and gone, where newly elected Democrat Governor Abigail Spanberger spit in the face of the labor movement. On May 14, Spanberger’s veto killed a decades overdue piece of legislation, passed overwhelmingly by the state legislature, to legalize and modernize the labor rights of Virginia public workers.
