ABC's Four Corners profiles a group of Aussie sovereign citizens who identify as sheriffs and believe they can make their own laws, hold pretend courts then cosplay as enforcers serving documents.
Their little badges are laminated, making them look *really* official.
Imagine a scenario where the world's village idiots got together and pronounced that they were now in charge of everything. That's SovCits.
While they may seem like a sad group of fantasists, there's an insidious side to their mission. As with VFF in NZ, they're infiltrating local Councils and clogging democracy by asking loads of dumb questions.
Most of them were weaponised during Covid lockdowns when conspiracies blossomed. A time when society's losers discovered that becoming a SovCit made them part of a crowd, albeit a crowd of deluded losers.
There's one thing these groups have in common. When they meet reality in court, the SovCits always lose. This is true in NZ, in every state of Australia and in every country in the world.
