As extreme heat and bushfire smoke make homes unsafe, cities are turning to Climate Shelters—public spaces offering free AC, clean air, and Wi-Fi. From Barcelona to Australia, these welcoming community hubs aim to protect the most vulnerable. #ClimateAction #UrbanResilience https://theconversation.com/in-a-heatwave-a-cool-library-or-shopping-centre-is-a-lifeline-do-we-need-more-climate-shelters-275661
In a heatwave, a cool library or shopping centre is a lifeline. Do we need more climate shelters?

On a hot or smoky day, a shopping centre or library can offer refuge. We need to design climate havens with the warming future in mind.

Proud of Muhammad Sanan, our GeoTech Master’s student, for presenting his poster at the GRSG Conference in London! 🌍📡

His work used remote sensing to trace historical channels of the River Ravi, showing that modern housing societies were built on former river paths, reframing flooding as rivers returning to where they once flowed.

Global Warming and its impact on United Nations policies

reduce pollution html

Global Warming is one of the biggest challenges facing our planet today. Its effects are felt in every corner of the globe, from the melting of polar caps to extreme climatic phenomena. Given this problem, the United Nations has played a fundamental role in the search for solutions to address climate change and mitigate its consequences.

What is Global Warming?

Global Warming refers to the gradual and sustained increase in the average earth temperature. This phenomenon is mainly caused by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, which release large amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. These gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), catch the heat of the sun and cause increased global temperature.

The effects of Global Warming are alarming. The melting of polar caps and glaciers, the increase in sea level, the acidification of the oceans, the loss of biodiversity, the extreme climatic events and the shortage of natural resources are just some examples of the consequences we face as a result of the Climate change.

The United Nations response

The international community has recognized the urgency of addressing climate change and has established several agreements and programs through the United Nations. One of the most important documents is the Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015 by 195 member countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (CMNUCC).

The Paris Agreement aims to limit the increase in global temperature well below 2 degrees Celsius, and make efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. In addition, it seeks to strengthen the ability to adapt countries and mobilize financial flows to support climate action worldwide.

United Nations Key Actions

To achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations has implemented a series of key actions:

  • Promote emission reduction : The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of policies and measures at national and regional levels is promoted. In addition, the transition to renewable energy sources is encouraged.
  • Promote adaptation to climate change : Support to vulnerable countries is provided so that they can anticipate and adapt to climate change impacts. This implies strengthening infrastructure, improving water management and promoting sustainable agriculture, among others.
  • finance climate action : The United Nations works on the mobilization of financial resources to support developing countries in their fight against climate change. This includes the creation of climatic funds and the promotion of sustainable investments.
  • Promote research and technological development : Technological innovation plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change. The United Nations promotes the development and transfer of clean and sustainable technologies to developing countries.
  • raise awareness and mobilize civil society : It is essential to involve civil society in the fight against climate change. The United Nations promotes awareness and education on this subject through campaigns and events worldwide.
  • The challenges to overcome

Despite the efforts made, there are still significant challenges in the fight against climate change. One of the main obstacles is the lack of commitment and action by some countries. Some governments have shown resistance to implement effective policies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, lack of sufficient financing to support climatic action in developing countries is another important challenge. Although climatic funds have been created, much remains to be done to mobilize the necessary resources and ensure that they reach those who need them the most.

    CONCLUSIONS

Global Warming is a global threat that requires a global response. The United Nations plays a crucial role in promoting policies and actions to address climate change. However, it is essential that all countries commit and take concrete measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to impacts and mobilize financial resources.

The world faces a critical moment in the fight against climate change. It is time to act together and achieve a sustainable future for coming generations.
