New York is often seen as a walkable city, which it is, but highways still rip through many neighborhoods — particularly in the outer boroughs with poorer, browner residents. Just a few minutes’ walk from my more pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is this elevated section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, an environment built more for cars than for people.
