Google does not show Palestine on the map.
That’s their business decision. This is ours.

I've mentioned this before about #UpScrolled and I think it relates to the #Fediverse
On that platform there are the big accounts of the social media famous and you have the small accounts of everyone else.
I think because of the nature of the app being pro-#Palestine, many of the popular accounts are of people who have had trouble on other platforms and found their accounts suspended. So many accounts already had a following, so instantly found a following on UpScrolled.
Because of #censorship from other platforms, UpScrolled was formed on a free speech policy. It also took an anti-algorithm view because algorithms have been used to shadow ban accounts.
The biggest problem was open registration because it allowed for scammers and trolls to infest the platform.
As a result you end up with a social media experience of following big accounts where you passively like and share but your followers are nearly always spammers or scammers.
As a small account you get little engagement. And it isn't really a place to make friends. I think even the nature of the TikTok/Instagram style platform makes you hold back on commenting and making acquaintances. It suffers, not having a a sense of community.
I've noticed that even the big accounts still want to get back onto the more popular platformed like #TikTok or #Instagram and they open up new accounts on them despite having an account on UpScrolled. UpScrolled doesn't satisfy them. And I think I know why.
Since there is a lack of community, why bother sharing any of the big accounts posts? Most people will already be following them and without a community, who are you sharing with anyway?
Also since the big accounts thrive on likes and shares, the more popular platforms will always be the most desirable. UpScrolled doesn't do it for the big accounts but it also doesn't do it for the small accounts.
Basically, I think the Fediverse does it better, and much of that comes from being averse to corporate, celebrity influence, but also it being built (as I understand it) from the ground up. Both the Fediverse and UpScrolled share the anti-algorithm thing but many Fediverse instances understand that unregulated free speech is a bad thing. The Fediverse mostly have good moderation, and being a cluster of Federating websites, no one person decides on what is correct. While this might not be perfect, it does allow instances to criticise the behaviour of other instances and invite change or defederation.
I think UpScrolled had the famous people too early and was too keen on a free speech ideology that allowed scammers and racists to infest the platform. Maybe it's the slow, steady build up that has made the Fediverse a success. But one of the key ingredients for a good social media platform is that is good for the small accounts. It's the small accounts that feed the big accounts and the the small accounts are the backbone of good social media, no matter what corporate media will tell you.
I've used UpScrolled before, and using Threads gives a very similar feel to that.
I really wish UpScrolled was in the Fediverse. It's a beautiful social network.

The best thing about UpScrolled is that ADL - and only ADL - thinks it's antisemitic that "israel" isn't listed as a location. 😎

Craig Mokhiber on X, 2026-04-03 https://x.com/CraigMokhiber/status/2039829020389376083 >> >> >> The UN Security Council will consider another outrageous resolution tomorrow, this time drafted by Bahrain (the current UNSC President and a US-Israel ally). A month into the US-Israel unlawful aggression on #Iran, the draft is entirely silent on the aggression, its perpetrators, and on ending the attacks, and instead seeks to expand the conflict by authorizing military force against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and even in Iranian territorial waters... There are hopeful indications that China & Russia may (finally) stand up to veto this dangerous draft, and even France has expressed reservations. But the #UNSC has twice gone rogue in recent months, trampling on international law and buttressing US-Israeli impunity, and has done nothing to stop the Palestinian genocide or the invasion of #Lebanon, so one could not guarantee that this latest outrage will be stopped. #palestine #Upscrolled @[email protected] @[email protected]
Maybe I should elaborate why I'm such a fan of #rednote (#xiaohongshu, chinese instagram basically) and #upscrolled (basically antiimperialist instagram).
They both are not open source and I dont know to what extend my data is used without my consent. Upscrolled claims to not use it at all. I dont have a reason to believe them or not to.
Why then do I frequent them?
Easy: its because they provide non white, non western perspective. It helps you see the selective empathy on mastodon.
