TUC condemns Trump’s attack - Workers Revolutionary Party

THE Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the UK’s three largest trade unions, Unison, Unite and GMB, yesterday condemned the US kidnapping of Venezuelan President Maduro. The TUC said: ‘The TUC joins the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and ITUC-Americas in expressing our “absolute and unequivocal rejection” of the US military attack in Venezuela, and the […]

Workers Revolutionary Party
Not sure how well this will go down with the new leader of #unison - members of which work in local government - and whose representatives are key to the control of the #labourparty machinery by the current leadership. It runs also against the consistent pressure by #tradesunions over many generations to reduce working time not to mention the contribution of a proper and sensible work life balance to well being - something that #keirstarmer himself has recognised albeit at a personal level.

In advance of the upcoming Resident Doctors #Strike, #UNISON members are advised:

UNISON members do not need to work outside your ‘normal’ scope of practice or role, unless their contract provides that they can be required to undertake such other workers’ duties.

UNISON members should not be expected to cancel annual leave or have annual leave requests refused because strike cover is needed.

UNISON members are not required to cover roles, responsibilities and duties of striking workers.

My warning as the new head of Unison: never again will we prop up politicians hostile to unions

I have been appalled by Wes Streeting’s attacks on resident doctors. The destructive right wing of the Labour party should know that this is a new era, says the general secretary-elect of Unison, Andrea Egan

The Guardian

"I am putting all the employers we bargain with – from Reform UK-run local councils to Wes Streeting’s Department of Health and Social Care – on notice: Unison will be fighting without hesitation to win for members. Our size and resources are without parallel among trade unions in this country. From this point on, those great assets will be geared towards transforming the lives of public-sector workers"
Andrea Egan, new General Secretary of Unison

Ms Egan has said she will not take the £181,000 salary on offer for Unison's general secretary, instead receiving the wage of social worker, her current career

Left-wing candidate Andrea Egan beats Starmer ally to lead Unison. 🗳✅️

With more than 1.3 million members working in sectors providing public services, including education, local government, the NHS and the police, Unison is the UK's biggest trade union.

Ms Egan won just under 60% of the vote, although turnout was low, with fewer than 100,000 of the union's members taking part

My (Adam) last job* was for an arms-length-body of the #NHS. I was part of a team that unionised the workplace where I then became a Unison Steward.

Reading that Unison have elected their new General Secretary is a leftwinger that #Labour kicked out for sharing socialist articles makes me smile.

Well done #Unison members, you've picked a good'un. #Solardarity

Andrea Egan to become Unison general secretary, succeeding Christina McAnea, who has close links to Keir Starmer

The Guardian

A huge congratulations to Andrea Egan on winning the #UNISON General Secretary #election with 59.82% of the vote.

We look forward to welcoming her to the #WesternIsles and working with her over the next five years!

Commiserations to outgoing General Secretary Christina who ran an excellent and respectful campaign, following five years of growth and progress for the union.

#Unison is a really interesting programming language - one of the most novel I've seen in recent years https://www.unison-lang.org/docs/quickstart/

It's hard to describe, but to me it feels like some modern blend of ideas from #Haskell, #Erlang, #Smalltalk and #OCaml. I hope that it will manage to gain some traction and that I'll be able to play a bit more with it down the road.
