Things are starting to change.
A year or two ago there was an uprising during a big mandatory Zoom meeting at my company. Some flunky had left the chat section activated, and a lot of people (particularly new hires) started using it. They wanted to know about cost-of-living raises.
The CEO hemmed and hawed and smiled a lot, but eventually a flunky admitted that the cost of living was NOT a factor in wages, and wasn't going to be.
People were furious. I was frankly surprised at how openly defiant they were. If they'd known that that was how the company was going to respond, many said, they wouldn't have taken the job in the first place.
So the chat was deactivated, and it hasn't been active for any major company Zoom meeting since. The peasants are NOT allowed to complain or conspire.
After that I contacted a unionization group. They weren't very helpful, unfortunately. What I think they SHOULD have done was set up a public online forum somewhere to allow employees of the company to discuss grievances and unionization. Instead they told me to talk with co-workers about it.
But we're all isolated from each other; most of us work remotely. So our only real way to communicate is through the company, electronically. And obviously nobody's going to feel safe doing that!
I brought up the subject cautiously with the one co-worker I'm close enough with to broach the topic. They either misunderstood me or just didn't want to get involved. So the whole thing went nowhere.
But I was talking with them again today, and THEY were complaining–a lot. So I mentioned "Bullshit Jobs". They're going to look it up.
