Unequal exchange of labour in the world economy
Hickel and colleagues find that, in 2021, the economies of the global North net-appropriated 826 billion hours of embodied labour from the global South, across all skill levels and sectors. Unequal exchange is understood to be driven in part by systematic wage inequalities. They find Southern wages are 87-95% lower than Northern wages for work of equal skill. While Southern workers contribute 90% of the labour that powers the world economy, they receive only 21% of global income.
The injustice of #UnequalExchange is staggering:

As Climate Crisis Worsens, the Case for Eco-socialism Strengthens
An excellent and concrete strategic presentation to address our ecological crises by South African ecosocialist Patrick Bond. It is long and deep, but worth a read. Bond takes on the contradiction between the dystopian and bureaucratic technofixes of the ecomodernists and the social change praxis of climate activists, ecofeminists and ecosocialists and proposes a strategic conception that synthesizes certain elements of the former within the latter framework. In so doing he seeks to transcend market-based strategies such as carbon trading and the like which are meant to provide a green cover for continued despoliation of the ecosphere.
