AUKUS partners launch joint underwater drone programme to protect seabed infrastructure

The United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have announced a joint initiative to develop advanced underwater drone technology under their AUKUS defence partnership. The uncrewed undersea vehicle (UUV) programme is intended to strengthen surveillance, protection, and operational capabilities beneath the oceans, particularly in relation to critical seabed infrastructure such as communication cables and pipelines. According to defence officials, the technology is expected to be ready as early as next year. The UK has pledged £150 million towards the project, although the total cost has not been disclosed. The announcement was made during a security summit in Singapore and comes amid growing scrutiny of AUKUS progress since its formation in 2021. UK Defence Secretary John Healey acknowledged past criticism, stating that the partnership had previously “talked too much and delivered too little”, but insisted that delivery had now improved. The UUV programme represents the first major project under Pillar Two of AUKUS, which focuses on advanced military capabilities such as artificial intelligence, hypersonic weapons, and undersea robotics. Officials stated that the drones will be equipped with advanced payloads and systems capable of conducting surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics support, and potential strike missions. The initiative also reflects rising concerns among Western allies about the vulnerability of undersea infrastructure. The UK has highlighted increased threats to its approximately 60 undersea cables, attributing heightened risk to foreign state activity, including alleged Russian operations and suspected incidents involving Chinese-linked vessels in regional waters. Similar concerns have been raised in the Baltic Sea and around Taiwan. Officials argue that developing UUV technology will enhance deterrence across multiple regions, including the Atlantic, Indo-Pacific, and Arctic waters, reinforcing the strategic importance of underwater domains in modern geopolitical competition.
