Detail 8/n, n=8

One entire corner sprig and the largest expanse of #UndersideCouching. Readers of my blog may recall that creating the sprig design took much experimentation with my paints. The distribution of shades of yellow is subtly different in each corner.

Now that the post is up on my blog (VirtuoSew Adventures), behold!

William the Marshal returning to the Chateau de Tancarville. The border is blue for his travels outre-mer, with broom for the Plantagenets he served, Templar crosses for Temple Church where he was buried, and roses for the garden the Victorians reburied him in.

Split stitch, trellis couching over surface satin stitch, and surface embroidery, all in silk, with basketweave underside couching in gold.

I'm continuing to work on my #UndersideCouching. It's not the easiest technique, so there are regular breaks and limited progress each day. The pattern is reasonably clear from the back, too, which it should be

Three sessions today, and the gold is creeping onwards. There are a few wonky bits, but on the whole I think it's not too bad. I just need to get better at not going wonky!

And another thought - this shade of gold would look very fine behind the red sandstone of #Aethelflaed and her refortification of Chester!

First section done, right into what will be the upper right corner.. Progress!

I've started the #UndersideCouching on #WilliamMarshall - a bit rickety, but will improve.
Terrifying, but I think it will be good...

I'm glad I decided to practice the basketweave pattern #UndersideCouching before starting to do it on #WilliamMarshall, because this is nowhere near neat enough!

I have a decision to make.
I will be buying a spool of Smooth Passing for the #UndersideCouching in #WilliamMarshall and it turns out that there are several shades of gold.
So, do I go dark and orangey or light and creamier?
Hmmm ...

Second practice panel. This is Smooth Passing No4, rather finer than the Jap in the first panel. It behaves better, but the fact that it's so fine is making me nervous about coverage.
Still, practice and all that. If I practise with something difficult, and use something easier, that will make everything go with a swing!
I'm also trialling working vertically, rather than across the body, and I'm preferring that, too.
