@bourgwick @mangrovevalley Ppreparing for a discussion in my Grateful Dead course, I’ve been listening to the first instrumental break in “Uncle John’s Band” in the 30 live versions I have. I noticed something new to me: before the 1979 version on Dick’s Picks 5, the verse preceding the break is the “take his children home” verse, but from then on, it’s the “here beside the rising tide” verse. Funny how one's perception of the same album changes over time. I was lukewarm on this album when I was younger, but I have grown to really enjoy it. Still, I think most of these songs work better when played live.
