What can the Dutch teach the UK about how to tackle the youth jobs crisis?
The Netherlands has the lowest rate of young people not in education, employment or training (‘Neet’) in the EU.
According to official UK statistics, 13.5% of young people are not in work or college. Among 18- to 24-year-olds the share rises to 15.8% – nearly one in six.
In the Netherlands, the figure has been below 5% for well over a decade.

"The cause is not a lack of effort by young people. The cause is not a failure of aspiration. The cause is not primarily a failure of skills. The cause is an economic model that regards unemployment as a policy tool"

This is the first of a number of reactions to yesterday's report by Lord Alan Milburn for the government on young people Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEETs). A much deeper technical analysis is in development: my continual theme will be that Milburn has missed the issue, and was that...
Looks like the Labour govt has decided to weaponise the welfare system and go after young people.
Behind all this noise by Milburn about "a “bedroom generation” of young people glued to their smartphones" who are unemployed is one unalterable fact... there are NO JOBS.

My initial thoughts on rising youth #unemployment are:
1) UK education system is currently failing and damaging too many kids. It’s not fit for purpose in terms of skills, practical knowledge or the impact it has on mental health and esteem.
2) Young people are chewed up and spat out by employers. No support, just used and fired on dubious grounds.
3) AI won’t help
