i am fascinated by this one, because i bought it directly from Joe Kohn, who ran Shareware Solutions II as a web (mail) order business in the 2000s. it arrived exactly as you see here: in a white envelope, with manuals printed on a laser printer.
sadly, joe passed away in 2010. but his happy Apple IIGS legacy lives on in the form of a website which carries all issues of his Apple II-centric magazine:

back in 1986, Origin Systems was enjoying huge success from its Ultima series - especially Ultima IV which had been released a year earlier
Ultima V was taking much longer than expected, and origin needed some in-between-games cash
the strategy was a complete ground-up remake of the first Ultima, now titled Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness. the game was rewritten entirely in assembly for the apple ]['s 6502
that source was then ported to many other architectures, mostly notably the intel 8086/ibm xt. the ms-dos version received entirely new artwork in 16-colour EGA
these are the physical artifacts for the 1987 Ultima I remake. not very many people have seen this version, as it has always been on the pricey side with collectors.
a few noteworthy aspects of this release:
- this is the only Ultima to include real metal coins in a cloth bag: gold, silver, copper.
- the four maps of Sosaria are not cloth, but heavy watercolour paper.
- this is one of denis loubet's best handpainted Ultima logos in terms of technical achievement. his faux-chrome finish reflects the lava below.
- broderbund was Origin's distributor for a few short years when it was trying to fend off EA's aggressive business tactics
- the PC port was done by john r. fachini. he appears to have done a handful of ports before he sadly passed away in 1990.
