UFO 50 features two dungeon crawlers and my experience with them couldn't be more different
UFO 50 was my most played game in 2025, and of course I couldn’t not look out for dungeon crawlers in it. The two are Valbrace and Divers and both have fairly unique features that make them feel very distinct.
My slow descent into hell in Valbrace
At first, Valbrace looks like a pretty standard first-person dungeon crawler: move around in a grid-based maze, solve puzzles and fight mons…. wait a second, punch out??? Yes, the combat system of Valbrace is heavily inspired by the old boxing game! And it slaps!
The magic system is also fairly innovative: at any point you can bring up a 3x3 grid that functions similar to the unlock screen on some smartphones where draw a symbol by connecting dots. Thus, each spell has its own symbol that you can find around the Dungeon. Yes, that means you can restart the game and cast Fireball in the tutorial floor.
So, why do I call it a ‘descent into hell’? All I have described so far sounds like a great foundation for a dungeon crawler. Well, a good idea can be ruined by a poor execution…
Saving system. The game saves every time you move to the next floor (and you cannot return back). How long does each floor take to reach the downstairs? Half an hour of active gameplay. With maze-like floors and no map, you will wander around a lot. With punch-out combat, one misstep can spell death. And then, even when you reach the end of the floor…. you meet the boss.
The boss that will use attack patterns that you had never seen before. Two-three attacks and you are dead. Game over. Start over again. IN THE SAME EXACT FLOOR. Since, yes, each floor is static as only encounters and some loot are randomized.
I don’t mean that Valbrace is a bad game and it must work very well for those who are willing to draw a map as they play. But for me the experience was harrowing and I started dreading the thought of continuing to play it. So I abandoned it.
Dungeon diving is underrated
What if instead of delving into underground structures of dubious origin, we dived into an underwater cave system filled with ruins of people long gone? Fighting through hordes of piranhas and crabs to recover an ancient artifact that’s actually just a pair of flippers… that’s Divers!
If I learned anything from lurking on the UFO 50 subreddit, it’s that Divers is widely hated. And, for sure, an obtuse, slow RPG focused on burning through your resources as you try to make one step of progress will irritate a lot of people. For me? I love Divers, and I truly believe it to be one of the best UFO 50 games.
First, the atmosphere. The underwater caves are creepy but not empty: in the background, schools of fish swim around and crabs crawl on the seabed; ancient structures lie silent amongst algae and nests of vicious piranhas. And at the deepest depths, things are truly weird.
The gameplay of Divers is the opposite of Valbrace: while VB features real-time combat and turn-based exploration, Divers focuses on avoiding battles in real-time while combats themselves are turn-based. When Valbrace kills you in one tough battle, Divers deplete your resources with each round, successful or not.
Speaking of resources, each piece of your equipment has a limited amount of uses: every attack, block or heal you perform with it depletes the uses. Each of your three lizardmen can equip two items and if both items are depleted they cannot do anything but to wait or attempt to flee. The only way to restore uses is to reach to the safety of your base (this is also the only way to save the game).
This creates a very thrilling gameplay loop: dive deep, find loot, unlock passages, reach safety - or run out of resources and die. At times the game is nerve-wracking! Enemies aren’t pushovers and can punish you plenty if you aren’t paying attention.
But that pearl you found in the depths… don’t you want to find out what’s inside?
