Having to debug one of my homelab machines up on the corner for the room is always something.

Somehow it now refuses to pass the boot stage (device enumeration phase) when the NIC is plugged in...

Diaabled CSM, Resize bar, networking stack,....

It just gives the middle again and again 😓😮‍💨

So, I'm in need of some confirmation of how UEFI works. Apparently, I don't even need a bootloader, because my UEFI shell already has that capability to switch boot entries? So then, I'd I just need to create an /EFI/BOOT directory in the EFI system partition, (from what I see it's often mounted to /boot or /boot/efi in Linux) and make a directory for each entry, containing an .EFI executable, a kernel image (vmlinuz) and the initramfs?

If I'm not wrong so far, great. Now, how do EFI stubs work? If it's the kernel booting itself from UEFI, do I not need an .EFI executable? Do I just dump a stub-compatible vmlinuz kernel image in /EFI/BOOT ?

After working on uxnfloppy for so long, I knew that I had to try writing an emulator for UEFI (the modern replacement for BIOS) at some point. Turns out that using clang and C is much easier than learning and writing 16bit assembly and doing software archeology, who could have known :p

I present to you 'uxnefi', a cobbled together UEFI application using the core of uxn2 (by @neauoire & @alderwick ) that can print stuff. Here is primes.rom:

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Mark Doran for his exceptional service as President of the UEFI Forum since 2005. For more than two decades, Mark has provided steady leadership, deep technical insight, and unwavering dedication to the Forum’s mission. His contributions have left an enduring mark on the firmware industry and the UEFI community. I have had the privilege of serving as Vice President of the UEFI Forum, working closely with Mark, the Board of Directors, and our member companies to advance our shared goals. Together, we have helped establish UEFI technology as the lingua franca of system firmware—the foundation of modern computing platforms built on a globally adopted industry standard. I am honored that the Board has appointed me to assume the role of President. I accept this responsibility with humility and a strong commitment to building upon the foundation established over the past twenty years. As we enter this next chapter, our work will be guided by a clear framework that defines our vision, priorities, and principles. Our vision is to ensure that UEFI and ACPI interfaces remain the lingua franca of modern firmware interfaces to operating systems, providing a secure, unified, and extensible foundation for computing devices. The UEFI Forum will continue leading the development of specifications and validation tests while promoting their global adoption. To realize this vision, we will focus on several key priorities. We will continuously evolve UEFI Forum specifications and tests to stay aligned with industry needs. We will anticipate and adapt to technological shifts, including artificial intelligence workloads, chiplet architectures, and new computing segments across cloud, edge, and embedded systems. Security will remain central as we proactively identify and address vulnerabilities. We will also encourage cross-industry alignment, collaborating with organizations such as PCI-SIG, TCG, OCP, and DMTF to promote consistency and interoperability across the platform ecosystem. Our work will be guided by enduring principles. We will continue to follow the Forum’s bylaws and consensus-based development model, ensuring standards reflect the industry’s collective expertise. We support multiple instruction set architectures. We will also support multiple firmware implementations, including open-source projects as well as commercial solutions. As the firmware landscape evolves, we encourage adoption of multiple programming languages, while promoting secure development practices. Above all, we emphasize security by design, ensuring firmware remains a trusted foundation for computing systems. Together with our members and partners, I am confident we will continue to strengthen the UEFI Forum’s role as the trusted steward of open firmware standards and help shape a more secure, interoperable, and innovative computing ecosystem. https://uefi.org/board | 21 comments on LinkedIn
