Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole gets the KDE 6 update! This means that you’ll be able to experience the newness and the awesomeness of the modern KDE desktop that replaces the 5.x series that was released on 2014.

It’s a revolution for Kubuntu users who are looking for the Plasma 6 desktop. If you’re running Kubuntu 24.10, you can now upgrade to Plasma 6 by initiating the full system upgrade.

Did you remember this development version of Plasma 6 that was demonstrated by KaOS back on September 2023? And did you remember that we had told you in the early stages of development that KDE 6.x will be included in the final version of Ubuntu 24.10?

KDE Plasma 6 features a sleek desktop design that follows the modern principles of this time and age, as well as new features, such as the return of Desktop Cube, the new “Ocean” sound theme, and the support for Islamic Hijri calendar. It also brings improvements that improve your user experience, such as panel settings being exposed in a nicer way and the visualizer for the Night Light transition time.

Now, you can see the demonstration of the desktop running under KDE Plasma 6.1!

Hallo liebes #Schwarmwisssen #fedihelp
Gerne retoot.

The wallpaper competition of the Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole ended on August 16th, 2024, and the winners are announced in each of the four categories:

  • 20th Year Anniversary: The special category to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of Ubuntu that was first debuted on 2004.
  • Mascot Theme: Your usual mascot theme for the release subject, which, in this case, is an Oracular Oriole.
  • Digital / Abstract: Wallpapers that are humanly generated using the vector editing programs, such as GIMP, Blender, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape.
  • Photography: High-resolution pictures taken from a digital camera, such as a photo of a city.

The winner wallpapers, just like we told you, are just eight wallpapers, with each category having just two winners. This means that the official wallpapers will consist of two 20-year anniversary wallpapers, two mascot theme wallpapers, two digital and/or abstract ones, and two normal photography images.

Based on your votes, the winners have been chosen. Let’s start with the 20th year anniversary category to celebrate the 20th year of the first version of Ubuntu, 4.10 Warty Warthog. All wallpapers have been licensed with CC BY-SA 4.0 and copyright works to their respective authors.

In addition to that, the Ubuntu team is expected to update the Oracular version of ubuntu-wallpapers package through Launchpad.
