Enable ESM in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to Continue Getting Updates

Time is nearly up on support for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, with standard software, bug fix and security updates coming to an end on May 29, 2025. Users on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS should consider upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (or newer) if possible, but if unable should enable Extended Support Maintenance (ESM) as soon as possible in order to continue receiving critical security patches. ESM for Ubuntu provides “10 years of vulnerability management for critical, high and selected medium [security issues] for all software packages shipped with Ubuntu.” Enabling ESM is a bit of a no-brainer since it’s free for regular

Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS Released with Major Secure Boot Fix

Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS is now available to download. A point-six release?! They’re a bit unusual. Long-term support releases typically only receive five point releases during their support cycle so what’s going on? I’ll quote Ubuntu’s Graham Inggs. They explained why this exceptional release was required in a mailing list post sent earlier today (March 23): “Unlike previous point releases, 20.04.6 is a refresh of the amd64 installer media after recent key revocations, re-enabling their usage on Secure Boot enabled systems.” You can read more about the issue on Launchpad (not that you need to – it’s now fixed, after all).

Ubuntu Brings Thunderbird 91 to Older Releases to Fix Security Flaw

Thunderbird 91 is being back-ported to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. A security vulnerability affecting the Thunderbird 78.x series both builds offer is being actively exploited in the wild. But as upstream support for Thunderbird 78.x soon ends the flaw is unlikely be patched soon. For an Ubuntu LTS release that’s a major issue. So to ensure its users are not affected, Ubuntu developers are backporting the latest Thunderbird 91 release (which is an extended support release, thankfully) to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 21.04.
