(EDITED to note that, as @oscarjiminy has informed me, it's an Apple issue: the fingerprint reader requires “secure enclave" access. Not surprising, but disappointing.)

Is anyone in my network running Ubuntu 26.04 on Apple Silicon via UTM? I’ve gotten it set up and running well but cannot get it to recognize the fingerprint reader for authentication — and can’t quite tell whether the issue is in the virtual machine settings or if it’s an Ubuntu issue… #utm #ubuntu #askfedi

*BSD virtual machines on MacBook Pro M2 with UTM.

These are setup for command-line usage only, like servers. The operating system icons were available under settings for each machine, a nice touch!

Does macOS count as *BSD, in the grand scheme of things?

I've been experimenting with #Linux VMs on #macOS using #UTM. Two #Debian VMs, both on Apple's hypervisor, one with QEMU, the other with Apple's #Virtualization backend. Both are running Apache with PHP stack, boot with less than 200MB RAM in use, running Debian's cloud kernel.

The VM with QEMU boots in about 4 seconds, the full Apple stack VM boots in about 2 seconds. A full blown Linux environment with a container-like startup time.
