I'm a big nerd for museum ships in general and Battleship museums in particular.

In addition to my volunteering on the Battleship Iowa, I have visited all of the U.S. Navy Battleship museums save two (the Texas and the Massachusetts).

Out of the 6 Battleship museums I've visited the USS New Jersey (BB-62) holds a special place in my heart. It was the first Battleship I ever laid eyes on. When I was in elementary school we took a field trip down to the San Pedro harbor for a harbor tour. The tour boat took us close to the (now closed) Long Beach Naval Shipyard where the New Jersey was in the process of being reactivated and we were able to get a very close look at her in all her glory.

To say this made an impression on pre-teen me is a gross understatement and without a doubt an was instrumental in my decision to join the Navy at 17.

Another photo of the USS New Jersey (BB-62) firing a full broadside. Note the streamers in the water as 88,000 tons of ship is moved sideways from the force of the blasts.

Each 16" gun can deliver a 2,000lb shell of high explosives onto a 10X10 ft target at 25 miles.

Some Navy stuff:

USS Iowa (BB-61) fires a full broadside of her nine 16″ and six 5″ guns during an exercise. Notice how the water is concaved from the concussion of the blasts.

I got to see the USS New Jersey do a full broadside once. We were 7 miles away and let me tell you, even at that distance (as well as not being the target!) it was terrifying! You could feel the thump of the guns in your chest.
